Ever wish that friend of yours would realise what a creep her boyfriend is? You know, the one who hits on all her friends behind her back and is blatantly never going to put a ring on it'? Well, meet Alex. He's in the break-up business. For a fee this devastatingly sexy smoothie promises to make love-blind girls see the light and leave their deadbeat lovers.
Played to perfection by leading light of French cinema Romain Duris (The Beat That My Heart Skipped), Alex and his haphazard team of heartbreakers (consisting of his sister and brother-in-law) have 10 days to break-up the wedding of uptight wine connoisseur Juliette (Vanessa Paradis) and her nauseatingly perfect English fiancé (Andrew Lincoln), a job that not only breaks their number one rule - never break-up couples who are genuinely happy - but proves a lot more tricky than anticipated.
Heartbreaker is the smartest romantic comedy to hit the big screen for years, boasting a faultless cast, an original plot, great comedy and a love story that will make your heart melt. Oh, and by the way, if you, like us, have ever had a fashion crush on Vanessa Paradis, this film will not disappoint. She seems to get more and more impossibly stylish with each scene - the very epitome of Parisian chic.
A directorial debut for Pascal Chaumeil, Heartbreaker also marks the first foray into comedy for Paradis and Duris (both known for their more intense roles) and along with a great supporting cast, all three more than rise to the challenge. The chemistry between the two lead characters is electric and the development of their relationship is subtle and thoroughly believable, something which most romantic comedies resolutely fail to achieve. Add into the mix a Dirty Dancing reanaction scene and bingo! Heartbreaker has got hit written all over it.
