While three star, self-catering options may've seemed like the simplest way to do beach breaks, traditional holiday destinations like Tenerife are tailored to fit around you like never before.
We try out the new generation of package deals with a week in Tenereife's Costa Adeje.
Does the phrase 'January blues' mean anything to you? We thought so. Booking a cheeky sunshine escape has long been the best way to kick start a new year and Tenerife is just far enough away to unwind for a week or so.
Neighbouring the island's party-hard destination of Playa De Las Americas, Costa Adeje strikes the balance between things to do and not having to do a thing. The familiar tourist sights are in reaching distance for those who want them, but it's the peaceful costal backdrop that provides the main attraction for most.
La Plantacion del Sur hotel, part of the Vincci Selection luxury hotel group, offers a gorgeous five star stay in southern Tenerife.
If long transfer times aren't your thing either, this stunning hotel is just 17km (approx a 35 minute drive) from Tenerife South airport. Score.
Popular with the stylish, young and old, La Plantacion boats unbelievable views out across El Duque beach and beyond, with a private shuttle service on offer for when the views are just too tempting.
That's if you can be dragged away from the hotel of course, with all rooms, suites and villas beautifully furnished in the traditional and luxurious. Outside your room, you'll be met with five pools (two are heated), fresh green gardens, waterfall features, games room, boutique and a separate kids area with playroom and pool.
La Plantacion's half-board basis promises to have foodies covered for the length of their stay. The hotel's main restaurant, El Buffet, serves a week-long rotating schedule of themed buffets - including European, Spanish and Oriental. Though it was the all-out BBQ that won our hearts. Flexible dining is also available if you don't fancy filling yourself full every night.
Alternatively, A la Carte restaurant El Gourmet Canario is available for bookings, while the poolbar and room service whip up a mean beef burger. Talking of bars, there are four spread around the hotel, where guests can enjoy the ultimate in relaxed vibes and a jazz band in the evening.
If there's one thing this hotel prides itself on - aside from their close attention to Feng Shui - it's their Nammu spa.
Kitted out with a hydromassage pool (several, actually), 16 treatment cabins, a long list of luxury treatments, a gym and a hair salon, this spa would prove just as pleasant away from the hotel walls. Designed to cater for all budgets, a Tailor-Made massage lasting 80 minutes will cost €95, while a Reflexo-Thai treatment (part of the Oriental Massage package) will cost €50 for 45 minutes.
For some physical activity (apparently a splash in the pool doesn't always count), a round of golf can be booked at reception - with reduced prices available for some courses - and there's a daily health programme which includes yoga, Pilates and Nordic Walking.
