Why go to Whitby?

Located on the coast of North Yorkshire, Whitby is a lovely little seafront town – which also happens to be a short drive from the famous Yorkshire Moors. Countryside and the sea - what more could you want from a weekend away? Beautiful country lanes, quaint cliff-top villages, a lively fishing port and sandy beaches - they're all here.

While Whitby's port is perfect during term time, it can get a little crowded during school holidays – but that's okay because there are several beaches nearby to enjoy. Our favourite is at Runswick Bay, where you'll find a sea-front café serving hot teas and sandwiches for hungry sunbathers.

The village, situated high up on the cliff, is an easy walk – and provides beautiful views over the shore.

Staying at the Raithwaite Estate

As a luxury hotel with spa located on the beautiful rolling hills behind Sandsend Beach, the Raithwaite Estate is a prime location for discovering what Whitby and its surrounding area has to offer.

As we arrived, a very kind fella - who we later identified as Peter the Porter - took our bags and parked our car for us, while we headed onto the terrace for lunch – a lovely welcome.

Check into Raithwaite Hall for a lush twin or double overlooking the terrace. From here, it's an easy stroll downstairs to both the Spa, bar and main restaurant.

If you're bringing pals or the family, book into one of the estate's gorgeous stone cottages called The Fold and you'll find a private lounge deck to kick back on, your own kitchenette and spacious living areas – plus plenty of nature trails just minutes from your door.

At just £35, the in-house Spa offers back, neck and shoulder massages – the perfect way to unwind. Don't forget to check out the sauna and stream rooms too, before relocating to the jacuzzi (it's a tough life here) and swimming pool – all of which are free for guests to use. Treatments should be booked advance.

What to eat

The Keep is the place to be for Raithwaite's delicious new Fish Menu (the scallops win hands down) or Brace is perfect for a Sunday roast.

We enjoyed the classic fish and chips while listening to a local music student play on the Estate's brand new Grand Piano. Frankly, we loved the chilled out vibes.

For a girlie gossip, book in for afternoon tea – which serves locally-produced clotted cream and strawberry preserve from 2pm. Quite handy when you're feeling a bit peckish after a morning at the spa!

How to get to Whitby

It's a long old journey from London (six hours) – but the drive through the incredible Yorkshire Moors makes it all worth it. Fields of bright-yellow rapeseed flowers lined our way, while the browns and greens of the hills made our already-amazing view even more dramatic.

We recommend having your own transport so you can nip out to all the beaches and villages easily.

If you are heading there by train, Scarborough is the nearest cross-country station, while Whitby has a local station of its own.
