Forbes Travel Guide announced an expansion into Europe by applying it's Star Rating system to London hotels for the first time.
Claridge's, the Dorchester and The Savoy were among the six luxury hotels to be awarded the highest five star status in the guide.
Secret inspectors visited establishments across the capital to rate them on 17 different categories, including guest engagement and service.
Six hotels and two spa hotels were given five star status, making London one of the top three destinations worldwide due to it's concentration of stars.
45 Park Lane, Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane, and The Lanesborough were the other three, with The Spa at Four Seasons and The Spa at the Mandarin Oriental gaining five stars in the Spa Hotel category.
The travel guide has been ranking hotels in America and Asia since 1958, and now plans to continue it's grading through Europe – with the best hotels in Paris expected to be announced in 2014.
Brown's Hotel, the Corinthia Hotel, InterContinental London Park Lane, The Goring, The Ritz and The Langham all received four stars.
