Hi all,

I did a search on Florida and didn't really find anything useful, so I wonder if anyone could share their experiences/thoughts with me about this sunny destination.

Thanks,

O.

Hi O,
like you, i will be a first time visitor next year, concentrating on the Orlando area, esp the parks. I have found quite a few good websites on this subject, but the one I frequent most is:

www.thedibb.co.uk/forums

its predominantly based around the themeparks, but has good shopping/dining/other attraction tips also. Check out the trip reports also - interesting to read other people's first hand experiences.

Hi Carolynn - thanks for your reply.

I will have a look at the link you sent. Do you know about other places to visit in Orlando, apart from the obvious theme parks? Is there much to do in the way of culture (museums, art, theatre, etc.)?

O.

To be honest, I've only concentrated on the themeparks/Kennedy/Sea World etc as there is soooooo much do do just by doing this, we have already allocated our 14 days away and are now looking to miss things out as we are just going to be knackered

As I've not been before, I wouldn't like to comment on the cultural aspect (or lack of it ) but I'm sure with the millions who visit every year someone on here will be able to give you more accurate info than me.

The only thing I have come across that maybe of interest is Cirque du Soleil (La Nouba) at
Downtown Disney West Side.

More than 70 artists from around the world -- including gymnasts, acrobats, dancers and clowns -- take artistic energy to riveting new heights in the original production, La Nouba, at the Cirque du Soleil theater in Downtown Disney's West Side. With its original musical score, extraordinary costumes, surreal sets, theatrical lighting and high-energy choreography, La Nouba weaves an unforgettable 90-minute tapestry of art, life and high drama on an Elizabethan-style stage in a 1,671-seat theater designed to engage and delight audiences.

La Nouba originates from the French expression "faire la Nouba," which means "to party, to live it up." La Nouba transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary, engaging the imagination from beginning to end. Featuring mesmerizing high wire and flying trapeze, stunning acro-gymnastic performances and other dynamic displays of coordination and strength, La Nouba promises to surprise, excite and mystify.

Are you just going to Orlando? Florida is a really big state and there is loads to do and see. Gulf Coast - st Petes, Clearwater, Naples etc for gorgeous beaches. Tampa for Busch Gardens - yet another theme park but also a fabulous adventure park with Africa wildlife. East Coast - Miami up to Cape Canaveral. Shopping, sophiscated nightlife and great beaches again. The Keys for spectacular bridges and islands, and yet more atmosphere in Key Largo. The Everglades for more natural attractions.

This is the official site for Florida tourism: http://www.visitflorida.com/

and this one for Orlando: http://www.orlandoinfo.com/uk/

Miami is fab, I love it. Captiva Island is wonderful, so quiet and with such beautiful beaches. Sanibel is more touristy but just as pretty. The lower Keys - past the bridge - are glorious, but before that you'd hardly know you were on islands. I rather like Key West despite its touristiness - it manages to retain a charm despite being swamped with visitors.

Pick your season - remember that summer is hot as stink and you run the very real risk of a hurricane. I'd go in February/March/April for lovely weather. Unless you really feel you must go to Disney/Canaveral, that bit of Florida has little to offer. I'd actually really like to to go the Panhandle, which apparently has beautiful beaches and is much less horribly inundated with tourists.

You'll love Orlando, it's just such an amzing place. We've been twice and have already booked to go back again next October for our daughters 18th. The shopping, the parks, the nightlife, it's just so amazing. We stay on I-Drive as everything we need is close by.

Who couldn't be wowed by the sight of Cinderellas castle for the first time :)
