Citalopram - vivid dreams

I've been taking Citalopram for two weeks now, having previously taken Fluoxetine (which wasn't having enough of an effect). I've found that every night I'm having incredibly vivid dreams - sometimes disturbing - and have trouble coming round in the morning. I'm also sleeping during the day (not working at the moment due to anxiety/stress). I take my tablet first thing in the morning, not at night time. I know that vivid dreams can be a side effect of Citalopram, but wondered whether this is likely to reduce the longer I take the meds. Has anyone had a similar experience? |

Yes! I have always had dreams most nights, but they are definately much more vivid since I started taking citalopram and often quite disturbing. I know what you mean as I end up waking up feeling more tired that before I went to bed, and I am always drowsy. I used to have real trouble getting to sleep at night, but now seem to have a sort of "reverse insomnia" if that makes sense! I hate to tell you this, but I have now been taking citalopram for nearly two months, and although the sleepiness is not as bad as it was, it is still there, and the dreams are as vivid as ever, every blinking night! (I have increased my dosage during this time, though, so that might be a factor)/ However I do feel that these pills are having an effect, and I have yet to experience a side effect that feels worse than the actual depression... I would give them a try for a few wks - the side-effects might wear off, and if they make a difference to how you feel you might decide the side-effects are worth putting up with! Two wks is still very early days. HC |

i had terrible nightmares and insomnia on citalopram, however it takes a while to get used to each AD so give them a bit longer and the symptoms are always worse to start with. if you find they dont work for you ask to try another one, there will be one out there that will help you. Thanks, all. Will see how it goes. I've got an appointment with the doctor in two weeks time and will speak to him about it if things are no better. In the meantime, I'll try taking the tablets before bed, starting tonight. Fingers crossed that the dreams aren't too scary tonight: last night they were terrifying and have stayed with me all day. |

I've been taking Citalopram for 9 months now and in the first few months I had awful, vivid dreams. They were so disturbing, I used to wake up feeling as if I'd had no sleep at all. Thankfully, these seemed to have tailed off and I find that I'm getting a good night's sleep on most nights. If it persists, it might be worth seeing your Dr to change to another med, but bear in mind that all ADs will have different side effects. |

Hi all, Well, I've been taking my tablet before bed for several days now - and no nightmares! My dreams are still vivid, but I haven't had any really disturbing ones. Still very tired, but it is still early days with these meds so will see how it goes. Thanks again for all your replies. |
