I keep hearing how great Facebook is, how people make friendsacross the world

So I joined the other day.

What a useless site!!! Everyones profile is locked, you can not search by peoples age for example or hobbies or location or anything

So anyone tell me what is so great about Facebook

well facebook for me is keeping in touch with people I already know.. not to network for new friends.  To show family members photos of the kids and whatnot.  If I make a new friend I want to keep in touch with then I add them to my facebook.

I agree. Facebook is fab for keeping in touch with people you meet, or already know. It isn't really used much for meeting strangers.

It is much more encompassing than that, but you don't need to join it if you dont feel the desire too!

Yep!

I have people on it from different countrys and it's nice to be able to see what they're up to and look at the photos they upload.. makes the world seem like a smaller place.  I very very rarely accept total strangers on my facebook.

If you're looking to make new friends then another site would probably be more usefull.

Also i dont like it when people keep putting up my picture.

Ive left it twice, come back twice and now im definitely not going back to it!!!!!

Facebook can be a useful way to keep in touch with friends and family all at the same time. Iv got family etc on there that live abroad and I see once a year. Before this, we would probably speak every once in a while, but being able to share photos, videos etc we feel as though we arent missing out too much on each others lives.

It was brilliant when my niece was born (she was too young to travel with us) but when I returned home, I could send them a video of her in my kitchen creating chaos and babbling away into the camera :-) My email allows that, but its a nightmare for them to download etc as they have a slower connection.

There are ways to use facebook to meet new people (search through the apps for things like Zoosk) and there was once where you can go through profiles (locked or not) and send a smile to people etc.

If you search for somebody that you already know then that could open up ways to meet people... Juat a thought. Maybe Myspace could be better for you, however not sure how frequently people use that nowadays.

Totally agree with this!

I joined because I kept getting friend requests via e-mail so joined to see what the fuss was about. Ended up just getting really annoyed with people putting pictures up of anything and everything they did, photographs of me that (yes I can untag) but can't get rid off and endless status updates about what people were having for tea, what they were thinking / doing, little digs etc.
