its not as nice as it sounds, on wiki it says its named after the breaking wheel, a form of torture used to martyr St Catherine

That was what was niggling at the back of mind  - I thought it was something medieval and toturous.

its all medieval and dark. i thought it was too, i guess the whole idea of guy fawkes burning isnt so far off either

i read Charing Cross was so named cos they used to burn prisoners on crucifixes nearby - the charring cross

that might be made up though.

On the subject of Charing Cross, a quick look at wiki says it was named after a "long-demolished Eleanor Cross... located at the former hamlet of Charing, at this point." Eleanor Crosses being monuments to Eleanor of Castile, the wife of King Edward I.

Catherine wheels are so pretty too...that's that ruined. Same as ringa ring roses...or however you say it was ruined, black death and all. x

The wheel was named after Saint Catherine of Alexandria from the early 4th century. She was believed to have been killed by being strapped to a wheel during the rule of the Roman Emperor Maxentius. I suppose they're named after her in honour.

Alternatively, Catherine Wheel are a rock band from Great Yarmouth. Laughing
