Hi everyone Me and my partner have decided that at 33 we are ready to start trying for a baby! I'm very excited as it will be our first! I've been on many forms of contraception starting with the pill from the age of 17 and then the past 4 years I had the merina. I didn't have a period for the whole 4 years, however I despite not actually bleeding I felt like I had the normal PMT feelings (very odd?!) I had the merina removed 2 weeks ago and had no bleeding straight after it was removed like a lot of people seem to have and no period yet. I realise it's early days and can take some time to get your period back, however I have had sex recently and have no idea if I could be pregnant as I haven't had a period! I guess my question is - do I have to have a period first after having the merina removed in order to become pregnant? I hope that makes sense! Many thanks to anyone who replies!Rumple x

You can technically get pregnant as soon as the Mirena is removed, even if you've had sex before removal (due to the time it takes for sperm to travel to the fallopian tubes), which is why they tell you to avoid sex for 5 days before removal if you don't want to become pregnant. So yes, you could be pregnant, but that would be unusual.

Not everyone has a withdrawal bleed straight after removal; for some women it's 4 weeks or longer before they had a bleed. I personally had a bleed for a couple of days after removal, and my period followed almost exactly 4 weeks after that, and I settled into a regular cycle straight away.

If I were you I'd give it another couple of weeks, and then do a test if there's still nothing.

Hope that helps!
