I have been off sick for 7 weeks now and it will be 9 as the doctor has signed me off another 2 weeks. I have had really bad cramps and trips back and forth to the hospital and sickness which has made me lose a stone in weight and headaches. I was put off initally at 5 weeks because I was losing so I really am trying to be careful. So I asked my employer  would it b ok for me to go part time and he said he would think about it.However he said it was a really busy time and to be honest wasnt very nice to me. I only want to work part time for a few weeks to im feeling better as I do want to go back to work as soon as possible. I would rather go back sooner and work part time than take more time off.My job is an office job but I have to do alot of filing and bringing folders up and down the stairs constantly, im so scared with my cramps that its going to make it worse. I dont know what Im going to do. Has anyone else been in this situation before?

I may be wrong but I thought employers had to offer something called rehab hours if you've been off and can't cope with normal hours. This might only apply in certain situations like after an op though, so don't quote me on that, but after my op back in april I was signed off for 8 weeks, then returned on rehab hours for 6 weeks.

I would ask for a letter from your GP stating you are fit to return but only on certain conditions. You could also request that Occ Health get involved; they will assess your working conditions and make suggestions such as reduced hours etc if necessary, and can be very helpful. Whatever they say your employer will be legally bound to follow.

First though, have an open, honest chat with your boss. Explain the situation and that at present you are simply not able to return on full hours as you simply aren't well enough (giving them your GP's letter to prove it), but that you are aware this is a busy time for them and are keen to return to work, even if it's on shortened hours. Make it sound like you're being proactive and doing THEM a favour; basically get across in a round about way that they can either lose you for a few more weeks, or have you there part-time, which I'm sure would be the better option from their point of view.

Hope that helps x

On telling your employer that you were pregnant they should have done a risk assesment which would have likely highlighted the carrying of heavy files on stairs and now that you have additional issues another health and safety assesment should be done which would stop you needing to carry the files on the stairs.

If, however, you are having trouble with full-time hours and you take a day sick in the last four weeks of pregnancy your employer can force you to start your maternity leave early so beware of that!
