My face is covered in spots at the moment and has been for about a month now. At first, I thought it was just time of the month. Every morning I wake up with at least 3 or 4 big, bluging whiteheads that as soon as I see, I squeeze them. They are always in the middle of my brows and round my mouth / chin.

I wash my face every day with a tea tree facial wash from Body Shop which has usually kept my spots at bay, but they're getting worse. I must admit I am slack at taking my make up off at night but always find, when I do, I get more. I am also using more make up now as well, to cover them up. I've got a new man as well and dont want him seeing my minging skin

Is there anything I can do to get rid of them, or stop myself getting them. I can handle 1 or 2, but I've got loads and it's really getting me down.

I always drink plenty of water and try and eat healthily

I know you will have heard this before but squeezing them is only going to spread the infection around your face and give you more spots.  It is hard though when they are nasty whiteheads.

I try not to squeeze them but get in the shower and use Olay Daily Thermal skin polish.  It's a chemical exfoliant and contains glycolic acid which 'dissolves' sebum and skin plugs that are blocking the pores.  It seems to keep my skin generally clear.

I find it helpful to use the Dermalogica antibacterial gel underneath make up so even though you're covering up, the gel will be working away to kill bacteria.  Apply it thinly, let it dry and then put make up on as normal.

Thanks SC, that's really helpful :) I'll have a look for those products today and hopefully they'll start working soon.

well first of all - i know exactly how you feel as ive struggled with my skin for a long time and im 30 now!  I tried a million lotions and potions and never really got anywhere - it was an endless cycle of spending loads of money and waiting 3 months hoping that this was the thing that was going to sort it!  nothing ever did....until i finally went to the doctor.

I was embarassed because i didnt think it was a serious enough thing to go to the docs but she was so sympathetic.  First of all they put me on zineryt lotion which after 7 weeks i had pretty much perfect skin!  i was so happy but it only works for a period of time as your skin gets used to the antibiotics.  I was on that for a year til it stopped working then i was put on dalacin t which didnt really work for me.  Im now on dianette which i dont think is for everyone but its been a total saviour for me - my skin is near perfect and i dont mind people seeing me without my make up for the first time in years.

I guess what im saying is that if its really upsetting you i would put an appointment on at the docs - they have access to lots of solutions and hopefully you will find the one that works best for you.

i hope this helps

I can suffer with whiteheads myself but have found that by using Biore Pore Unclogging Scrub regularly it keeps them at bay.  This scrub contains salicylic acid.  I know if works because if I stop using it the whiteheads come back. it's cheap as well £5.00 for a 200ml tube which lasts ages. x

Do you know why you're suddenly getting more?  Have you switched to a new pill, or changed your diet in some way?  If you can find out the cause it might be easier to get rid of them!

I know it's an obvious one, but how much water are you actually drinking? I struggled with breakouts until recently when I started drinking at least 1.5 litres a day, sometimes 2 litres and I can honestly say I haven't had a SINGLE spot since.

pinklady, if the spots are between your brows and on your chin, that's directly related to the liver!

If you don't usually get spots, then a deficiency in vitamins (especially B vitamins) can really cause you to break out, so take a really good vitamin & mineral supplement every day (I've been using perfectil and my skin hasn't looked this amazing in years!)

I've suffered from terrible acne for years (huge red spots over my cheeks), and the only thing which has made my skin crystal clear is the pill Dianette from the doctors. The other wonder product has been Dermalogica's medibac clearing gel, which I've used for years and swear by! Mario Badescu drying lotion is also brilliant on actual spots (and is light pink tinted, so you can actually hide spots at night when with your partner without having to look red!)

I also find that drinking a glass of warm water with lemon juice in the morning really helps to flush my body out, and that drinking alcohol or consuming sugar upsets my skin.

Hope that helps!

I used a peel off face mask last night and today is the first morning in weeks that I haven't woke up with a spot or two. I used to use Biore Pore Unclogging Scrub and it was good for a while but then it seemed to stop working.

I haven't changed my pill or anything but I have been drinking a lot more as my new b/f is in a band and he has gigs pretty much every weekend :( So the drinking is obviously effecting my liver, hence the spots.

Thanks for the reccy's on the products, I'm off to look on ebay for them!

Hi there,

I've got very oily and sensitive skin and although I'm in my late twenties still suffer from spots. However, I have learned what works best for my skin so can pass on what works for me.

- Cleanse your face, but use a gentle cleanser that doesn't disrupt your skin too much. I like the MADARA cleanser, also a big fan of the Africology cleanser, which is a bit more expensive

- If you're skin doesn't feel tight after cleansing, don't moisturise. Oily skin doesn't need much moisturising. Ignore all the magazines that tell you to cleanse, tone, moisturise and observe your own skin to see if it needs it

- If you have oily skin that morning, use a little bit of oxy gel on your most oily areas

- Use mineral make-up that doesn't contain any chemicals - I really like Afterglow Cosmetics as it  suits my skin tone

- Use a clay mask twice a week. Invest in good products so find a brand that works for you

- If you get spots on your jaw line and neck, they are from stress - I learned this the hard way

I also found that the book 'The Skin Type Solution' was really useful. I learned a lot about my specific skin type

Good luck!
