We don't mean to make you irrationally paranoid, but handbag snatching is on the rise, and we don't just mean in busy cities.

Be you in the centre of London or strolling down the high street in Bangor, bag thieves really do operate in all kinds of areas.

To make it a bit harder for thieves to snatch your tote, clutch or satchel however, there are are a few ways in which you can tweak your carrying style.

Compiled by the trusty Dallas Police Department, who we're sure are used to seeing some pretty snazy designer bags on their beat, here are five ways to carry your handbag more securely...

TIP 1: CROSSBODY BAGS. Wear your bag with the strap quite literally 'across your body'. That is, the bag on one side (as an example, say the right side), with the
strap crossing your body, and the top of the strap resting on the top of your left shoulder.

TIP 2: CLUTCH BAGS. Carry a clutch against your body, and under your arm, with your arm holding the bag as well as your hand. Be aware that some thieves could come from behind and "punch" the bag forward. When it falls on the ground in front of you, they'll rush forward, grab it and run. The same also holds true in reverse (approaching from the front, punching it behind you).

TIP 3: PURSES. Consider an alternative to a purse (or a wallet). Fanny packs [bum bags to you and us] are becoming more common, and even smaller 'waist wallets' that strap
around your waist are common for those who travel abroad.

TIP 4: WRAP IT UP. During cooler months, try to carry your handbag under your coat

TIP 5: PICK YOUR POCKET. Instead of carrying a wallet in your hip or back pocket, move it to a front pocket and walk with your hand either in that pocket, or with your thumb hooked over it.

What do you think? Reckon you pay enough attention to keeping your handbag safe?
