How will the sun damage my handbag?
Exposing your leather (or fake leather, cough) handbag to direct sunlight and high temperatures can cause the leather to dry out and crack, and the material to fade.
Whilst it should be fine day-to-day, if you are planning to sit out in the sun all day, keep an eye on it.
How can I protect my bag?
Make sure you keep it out of direct sunlight where possible, and minimise exposure to extreme heat.
One of the reasons the summer can damage your bag is like your own skin, the hot weather can cause it to dry out, and this can lead to cracking in the leather.
In order to keep your bag in top condition for years to come, invest in a leather moisturiser (which usually contain beeswax) or saddle soap. However be wary of using products like olive oil, as there is conflicting advice as to whether these types of oils do more harm than good to your leather.
Help! My bag is sun damaged, what can I do?
Again, if you bag starts to look a bit dry, use a leather moisturising product to gently relax it.
Specialist restorers can also re-dye the leather and give it back a new lease of life, but remember ongoing maintenance of your bag is cheaper than having it restored.
