Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper talks to handbag.com about her fears for the future of her daughters and why she thinks her counterpart Theresa May has yet to step up for the women of today.
International Womens Day has inspired the team at Handbag Towers to focus on empowering women this month and as part of this we headed to parliament where our editor Rebecca Holman asked shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper a few tough questions about what the future holds for women in terms of equality, careers and family.
Shockingly we discovered that due to changes in tax and benefits as set out in the budget women will be hit about twice as hard as men with men paying about £4.20 a week more and women paying £8.80 despite still earning and owning less than men. That doesnt sound very fair to us and more worryingly were Yvettes own fears for the future of the next generations stating that, for the first Ive now started to worry about my daughters. Even if you dont yet have children it is frightening to think we might be bringing up a generation that has less opportunities than us.
