Beating the redundancy blues

Woman with box of possesions: Beating redundancy blues: career advice

It's not you, it's them
Remember, it's your role that has become redundant, not you, so don't take it personally. Losing staff is not a decision companies take lightly but it doesn't reflect on you or your abilities, and potential employers will know that too.

Know your rights
There are laws about how redundancies should be handled that are in place to protect you, so make sure you know your rights. If there's no alternative job available for you within your company, redundancy may be the only option. You can check whether your employer is following the right procedures by checking your company handbook or speaking to an independent organisation such as the Citizens Advice Bureau.

Leave on a positive note
It can be hard to keep yourself motivated once you know you're leaving but continuing to be professional in such a difficult situation will ensure your ex-colleagues have nothing but positive things to say about you... which will always come in handy when it's time to ask for references.

Be prepared
Have an up-to date CV and a clean outfit ready at all times, in case you get called for an interview at short notice. It also pays to be flexible about when you are available to attend interviews. Your catch up with the girls or that weekly yoga class can wait - securing your next job needs to take priority.

Turn it into an opportunity
Redundancy doesn't always turn out to be a negative experience. If you weren't enjoying your job any more, why not see this as an opportunity to explore new avenues? Whether you dream of retraining as a massage therapist, have a burning desire to become an author or feel like it's time to get out of your comfort zone and explore this big, wide world of ours, why not seize the chance?
