Aside from recent press reports that Kate Moss likes to slink off to the Cotswolds for the odd weekend, it's not a place I would have ever considered for a weekend break. That said, pre-baby, driving a couple of hours out of London to relax wasn't exactly something I'd ever considered. But after five months of pretty much no sleep and something of an unhealthy urge to stay within my own four walls, when someone recommended a visit to the Priory Inn in Tetbury I jumped at the chance.
Location
Sitting pretty on the River Avon the first thing that hits you about Tetbury is not only its gorgeous location, but the amazing grey stone that runs throughout. With its proximity to London - by train it's only 1½ hours from London Paddington - it's become a popular destination for those wanting to move out of the capital and commute in. And you can see why – not only are the surroundings beautiful, but it also really flies the flag for local shops and restaurants.
Not just a hotel, the Priory Inn also boasts a great local restaurant and its location at the heart of the town means it's the first stop for those looking to stop over. But for myself, husband and five-month-old daughter, the best news was that the Priory prides itself on its child-friendly attitude - something that's suddenly become a really big issue for us!
The owners, Tanya and David Kelly, took over the property a couple of years back and really put it on the map. Not only did they give it a thorough make-over, but they also offer locals and visitors an award-winning-gastropub-style restaurant with a feast of 'modern rustic food at affordable prices'. No arguments from me. Another attraction is the gourmet pizzas cooked in a wood-fired oven(also available to take away) so good food is on hand, whatever the time of day! We really enjoyed the hearty breakfast on the Sunday morning – full English with all the trimmings. Baby monitors work in the restaurant so worried parents can escape for a bit of grown-up time in the evening.
When we arrived, what a treat for us to find a cot fully made-up in our room and a basket of goodies, from baby wipes to toys, for the baby. It's a really nice touch for parents who have to lug so much stuff about. The rooms were nicely decorated to a good standard and we were extra pleased to look out at see a view incorporating a bit of green for a change.
Extras
Another big plus on the kids front was the family room. No need to fret about your kids making a noise here as this room is exactly for that. Parents can enjoy a drink here and use the fridge and bottle-warming facilities if need be. Next door to the hotel is the Mint Beauty Company where treatments from massage to facials are available. There are plenty of deals between the two, so look out for offers when you book.
Have a potter around the town with its plentiful antiques shops and relaxing cafés or take the family off to Westonbirt Arboretum for a lovely walk in lush surroundings (among 16,000 trees!). There's also a wealth of historic houses to check out (including Highgrove House).
