Call your friend immediately to cancel
Ask him to change the dinner to another night as you already have plans
Tell him that your mate will always comes first and he'll always come last and you hate romantic dinners anyway!

Great, he should do more exercise and it's a chance for him to meet new people
How could he! We should do everything together. I'll have to volunteer to serve drinks at half time so I can still be with him!
