You worked hard on an application for a job you really wanted and for which you are well qualified. What is your first thought when the rejection letter arrives?
It's just not worth trying – I might as well give up.
I am bitterly disappointed, but I'll find out why and try to do better next time.
I deserve to have that job - the other candidates were useless.
I'm nowhere near good enough to get an interesting, well paid job.

You've just been through the annual appraisal process and have received some extremely negative feedback about your performance. How do you react?
Accept the judgement stoically – this only confirms your low opinion of yourself anyway.
Ask for specific examples of where you are going wrong and for help in making improvements.
Hide under the desk and lick your wounds.
Realise it's a hostile world out there – got to toughen up to survive.
3
You are a leader of a team whose project has just failed. What do you say to team members?
This is serious, but we'd better learn from our mistakes and start over.
I'm going to find out who is responsible for this failure and kick some ass.
This is the last time I'll ever take on a project which is that important.
It's all my fault, I've let you down.
4
You desperately want to get published and have submitted several articles to professional journals. This morning yet another rejection has arrived. What do you do?
Call your best friend and tell her your tale of woe. Then give yourself a treat and resolve to try again
Feel foolish for ever trying and give up writing articles
Phone the publisher and berate them for their failure to recognise the quality of your writing.
Outwardly accept the rejection but privately express your despair to close friends and family.
5
You are reasonably happy in your job but have just been made redundant. What do you say to friends who are trying to help?
I'm not going to let them grind me down! Help me write a letter to say how much I despise them.
It's a disaster, but it could also be an opportunity to rethink my career goals. Will you talk it through with me sometime?
Why are they picking on me - it's not fair! Let me cry on your shoulder.
I don't feel like talking - leave me alone!
