Graphic anti-smoking tumour advert to be shown

The Department of Health have released a new series of anti-smoking adverts showing people smoking cigarettes with a tumour growing out of the end.

The shock campaign released by the government will explain that just 15 cigarettes can cause a mutation that could lead to cancerous tumours.

Due to appear on TV, online and in poster form in February, the campaign has cost £2.7million and has the backing of Cancer Research UK.

Chief medical officer Prof Dame Sally Davies explained, 'We want smokers to understand that each packet of cigarettes increases their risk of cancer.'

She added, 'People will see a man smoking and then a cancer growing out of the cigarette. That is what happens in people's bodies.'

With a quarter of all cancer deaths caused by smoking, the government hope this campaign will deter young people from starting smoking, or provide motivation to quit.
