DANGER! 1 in 3 people cross the road on their phone

One in three pedestrians are too distracted by their mobiles to look both ways when crossing the road.

A US study has suggested that texters are four times more likely to ignore red lights or not check for oncoming traffic properly before stepping off the pavement.

The research carried out by the Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Centre in Seattle found that ten percent of people listen to music, seven percent text and six percent are too busy having a natter to pay attention to where they were going.

The department of Transport estimates that there has been a five percent rise in the numbers of pedestrian casualties since June 2011.

Edmund King, from the AA, commented that, 'There have been tragic deaths through people forgetting their immediate spatial environment.

This study confirms that millions of pedestrian, cycling and driving mobile device zombies can be tuned into the wrong thing at the wrong time - road users need to be tuned into what's a happening around them.'
