Most of us go to the gym after work to avoid dark mornings, but new research suggests setting your alarm clock an hour earlier could be one of the best things you ever do.
According to the experts, exercising in the morning before you eat breakfast is more effective for weight loss than exercising after.
Pounding the treadmill on an empty stomach is great for burning body fat, but it also triggers a big reduction in artery-clogging blood fats that lead to dangerous heart disease.
Dr Jason Gill, who conducted the research at Glasgow University, revealed that exercise done before breakfast is more beneficial, because it forces the body to rely on its fatty stores for energy.
An experiment on a male test group showed that those who did an hour's brisk walk before brekkie used up 33% more fat than those who exercised after the sausage sandwich.
Tests also showed that morning joggers experienced a bigger drop in blood fats.
Naturally the body has enough fat and energy reserves for 90 minutes of vigorous exercise, any more than that and you would need a bowl of cereal!
Dr Gill said, "The biggest difference is between doing nothing and doing something. If you are going to do something, then there is a slight advantage in doing it in a fasted state. But if you find you keel over because you can't do exercise before you have your slice of toast, then do it afterwards. You are still going to get a huge benefit."
Of course, they're not saying that you will suddenly drop a dress size by exercising before breakfast, but it will help you on your way to a better bod.
Now there's no excuse for a lie in and breakfast in bed...oh okay, maybe on a Sunday.
