According to new research, people who lose their virginity after the age of 20 enjoy more satisfying relationships further down the line.
Scientists have discovered that these '20-year-old virgins' are likely to be university educated, intelligent and career minded.
The study, conducted by psychological scientist, Paige Harden, at the University of Texas, discovered that those who had their first sexual experience later in life had more qualifications and a higher household income than those who lost their virginity in their teens.
There was also a direct link between 'late bloomers' and low levels of relationship dissatisfaction - meaning they are the happiest with their current partners.
Dr Harden believes the link holds up even after taking genetic, environmental, financial, educational and religious differences into account.
She said, "It's possible, for example, that people who have their first sexual encounter later also have certain characteristics - for example, secure attachment style - that have downstream effects on both sexual delay and on relationship quality. They could be pickier in choosing romantic and sexual partners, resulting in a reluctance to enter into intimate relationships unless they are very satisfying."
The team in Texas also found that people who lose their virginity later are less likely to be married with children and more likely to work in well-paid industries.
