Look after your weight
Being underweight or overweight
can delay the time it takes a woman to conceive
. Excess body fat can lead to an overproduction of certain hormones, like oestrogen, which confuses the body's ovulation cycle
and disrupt ovulation leading to less regular menstrual cycles, and lower the chances of getting pregnant.
On the flip side, being underweight and having too little body fat means your body may not produce enough hormones to ovulate each month or to sustain a pregnancy if you do conceive. Women who exercise intensely
(like long-distance runners or competitive athletes) may stop ovulating or ovulate less frequently.
