Anne Hathaway in Armani Privé

With the awards season in full swing the biggest, glitziest and most important of them all is just a few days away - yes, it\'s the Oscars on Sunday! The countdown to see which stars will be wearing what on the red carpet has begun. But with all the attendees keeping their label of choice top secret, and some, no doubt, still agonising over what designer dress to plump for, it\'s tricky to tell and until that actress steps out onto that famous red carpet we really don\'t know. Or do we? We\'ve picked 12 of the most stylish starlets set to attend this weekend\'s awards bash - from nominees to presenters and guests - and matched them to a designer dress that we predict they will wear come Sunday. Carey Mulligan in something quirky and British, Sandra Bullock in a classic American look, Kristen Stewart in something edgy and glamorous? Find out...

Anne Hathaway picture: Now this is a dress fit for a queen. A white queen that is. Seeing as Anne plays the ghostly character in Tim Burton\'s upcoming take on the fantasy classic, Alice In Wonderland, we reckon she\'ll continue to channel the royal vibe and pick something light, something regal and something majestic. This dress, from the Armani Privé spring 2010 couture collection, ticks all the boxes, and then some. There are several other factors pointing to an Armani dress choice for Anne: one, she was guest of honour at last month\'s Armani Privé spring 2010 couture show, swotting up on the Italian couturier\'s latest gowns, and two, she\'s worn Armani Privé on the red carpet before. Several times in fact, wowing the crowds at the 2009 Oscars in a stunning beaded column dress and at the Golden Globes of the same year in a midnight blue Swarovski crystal embellished gown. So, even though she may go for something different, we predict that she will stick to what suits her best and opt for Armani once again. And why not when it looks this good?

Sandra Bullock in Oscar de la Renta

Sandra Bullock, celebrity fashion, red carpet,Red carpet dresses,Instant outfit,Oscars 2010 sandra bullock in oscar de la renta

Now then, Sandra Bullock is probably the favourite to scoop the Best Actress gong, for her role in the Blind Side, at this year\'s Oscars. And what would a potential award winner wear? Well, we think we have the answer. America\'s sweetheart du jour would look just perfect in this plum asymmetric Oscar de la Renta dress from the autumn/winter 2010 collection. We think she\'ll go for something classically American, we think she\'ll go for some colour (like she did at the Golden Globes in royal purple Bottega Veneta), we think she\'ll opt for something unfussy and understated, and we think, well, that she\'ll wear this. Simple as.

Kristen Stewart in J.Mendel

celebrity fashion,red carpet,Red carpet dresses,Instant outfit,kristen stewart,Oscars 2010 kristen stewart in jmendel

In an era of media-trained-to-within-an-inch-of-their-lives and identikit glossy young starlets with Disney princess smiles, Twilight actress Kristen Stewart is a breath of fresh air. Some say she\'s moody, some say she\'s miserable, but we think she\'s just acting like any other 19-year-old - sometimes awkward, sometimes shy and a bit of a tomboy. With that in mind she needs a dress that\'s not too frothy, fussy or flouncy, but still Oscar-worthy; a dress that\'s not too feminine, yet striking and beautiful. And here\'s a clue as to what she might wear: J.Mendel. We know that it\'s a label she favours, having worn several dresses by the French brand in the whirlwind of premieres to promote last year\'s The Twilight Saga: New Moon. We also think that this colour dress, from the autumn/winter 2010 collection, would really suit her milky pale complexion and jet black hair. It\'s edgy, it\'s streamlined, it\'s cool. It\'s so Stewart.

Carey Mulligan in Erdem

celebrity fashion,red carpet,Red carpet dresses,Instant outfit,Carey Mulligan,Oscars 2010 carey mulligan in erdem

All eyes will be on Brit newcomer Carey Mulligan at this year\'s Oscars, especially back here in the UK, to see what outfit choice she makes. Completely unpredictable when it comes to the red carpet (who saw that monochrome floral Vionnet dress coming?), this much we know: it has to be super-special (she may win an Oscar after all), it won\'t be safe or boring, it\'s likely to be colourful and she\'s not afraid to try something different. This pretty marble-print Erdem autumn/winter 2010 dress does it all. Enough said.

Audrey Tautou in Givenchy

celebrity fashion,Audrey Tautou,red carpet,Red carpet dresses,Instant outfit,Oscars 2010 audrey tautou in givenchy

We can totally see Mademoiselle Tautou wearing this. This French fancy tends to go for short dresses over floor-length styles to avoid dwarfing her small frame (check), she likes to show off her enviable pins (check), is partial to something with ruffles and hence show-stopping enough for an occasion such as the Oscars (double-check) and would probably opt for something French, natch. This Givenchy spring couture dress - all candy pink with giant folds - does all this and more. It\'s romantic, pretty and super-chic. And quite frankly, nothing less will do for our Audrey.

Zoe Saldana in Jason Wu

celebrity fashion,red carpet,Red carpet dresses,Instant outfit,zoe saldana,Oscars 2010 zoe saldana in jJason wu

The gorgeous American actress\' career is most definitely on the up following impressive performances in the smash-hit film Star Trek and 3D wonder Avatar (nominated for nine Oscars no less), and with that we\'d like to see her in a dress by a designer on the cusp of superstardom too. Step forward Mr Jason Wu. Already a firm favourite of America\'s First Lady, Michelle Obama, Wu\'s fashion stock is on the rise. And what a talent he is. His ladylike and timeless evening dresses are always a delight and are certain to have Hollywood starlets clamouring to wear them. This strapless sugary pink feather-print number from Wu\'s recently unveiled autumn/winter 2010 collection, in particular, is truly special and fitting for an actress\' Oscars debut. Saldana + Wu = a match made in fashion heaven.

Diane Kruger in Christian Dior

celebrity fashion,diane kruger,red carpet,Red carpet dresses,Instant outfit,Oscars 2010 diane kruger in christian dior

This standout gown from the Christian Dior spring couture collection is certain to have actresses fighting to wear it on the red carpet. But there\'s one star in particular that we can picture wearing this, and her name is Diane Kruger. The frosty pastel pink colour will work wonders with her fair hair and complexion, the streamlined cut will look stunning with her figure and the ice-blue bustle takes the dress from nice to exceptional - it\'s classic Diane. The gown is opulent, beautiful, feminine and unique. It\'s what Diane does best.

Maggie Gyllenhaal in Lanvin

Maggie Gyllenhaal,celebrity fashion,red carpet,Red carpet dresses,Instant outfit,Oscars 2010 maggie gyllenhaal in lanvin

It has to be Lanvin, doesn\'t it? At the National Board Of Review gala, she wore Lanvin. At the LA premiere of her latest Oscar-nominated film Crazy Heart last month, she went for Lanvin. At last year\'s Golden Globes, yep, you guessed it, Lanvin, in an unforgettable blue leopard-print dress. We predict that for this weekend\'s Oscars ceremony Maggie\'s love affair with the French fashion house will show no sign of abating and we\'ll see her in this stunning black slashed-to-the-thigh Lanvin spring 2010 dress. If ain\'t broke don\'t fix it, right?

Kate Winslet in Marchesa

Kate Winslet,celebrity fashion,red carpet,Red carpet dresses,Instant outfit,Oscars 2010 kate winslet in marchesa

Last year\'s Best Actress winner will be on presenting duty at this weekend\'s ceremony and despite her penchant for Yves Saint Laurent (which she wore to collect her Oscar in 2009), we\'d like to see her in something British. And what better tribute to British fashion than to wear a dress by Marchesa - still the go-to label for Hollywood starlets seeking a knockout red carpet look. Georgina Chapman of Marchesa is the queen of the red carpet and this dress, from the autumn/winter 2010 collection, would look great on Kate. The strapless lace bodice of the dress teamed with a sheer chiffon fishtail just oozes glamour. It\'s sexy, romantic and worthy of an Oscar winner.

Mélanie Laurent in Anne Valérie Hash

celebrity fashion, red carpet,Red carpet dresses,Instant outfit,Oscars 2010,Melanie Laurent Melanie Laurent in Anne Valerie Hash

As a newcomer to all this fashion malarkey we reckon Mélanie will opt for something young, fresh and fun, just like her. After playing Soshanna, the French/Jewish orphan with a vengeance in Quentin Tarantino\'s Nazi fantasy Inglourious Basterds, Laurent has been flung into the spotlight and is still finding her feet when it comes to designer fashion. Always experimental, always interesting and never boring (remember that white trouser suit at the Cannes premiere of IB?), we think she\'ll go for something quirky and what better look than this spring 2010 metallic-shot organza dress with sheer top by Anne Valérie Hash? Perhaps not worn with the Converse trainers though - that would be taking it a little too casual. It is the Oscars after all.

Vera Farmiga in Carolina Herrera

celebrity fashion, red carpet,Red carpet dresses,Instant outfit,Oscars 2010,Vera Farmiga vera farmiga in carolina herrera

Carolina Herrera is a label trusted by starlets wanting classic and beautiful dresses for truly special occasions and remains the fail-safe option for guaranteed red carpet glamour. Vera Farmiga is an actress not known for her fashion risk-taking and we predict that the Up In The Air star will wear something elegant, ladylike and striking. This Carolina Herrera dress, from the designer\'s autumn/winter 2010 collection, is all that and more. The asymmetric shoulder and column style creates a stunning silhouette and the gold brocade detailing with black fan-effect sash is ultra-luxe and sophisticated without being boring. Gorgeous.

Penélope Cruz in Nina Ricci

Penelope Cruz,celebrity fashion,red carpet,Red carpet dresses,Instant outfit,Oscars 2010 penelope cruz in nina ricci

No matter what she wears, whether it be Italian Dolce & Gabbana and Armani or American L\'Wren Scott, Cruz always stays true to her Spanish roots. The sexy senorita wearing this spring 2010 Nina Ricci gown is a perfect match. It\'s black (so it\'s demure enough for an event as grown-up as the Oscars), its frilly femininity is classic Nina Ricci (it has fashion prestige), it\'s floor-sweeping with ruffles and lace galore (it\'s red carpet worthy) and it has a touch of Flamenco about it (so it nods to Spain too). Hot dress plus hot Iberian star is a formula for Oscar gold.
