Woman eating a burger
Ever noticed how hard it is to find a two-finger Kit-Kat these days? Or how small and unsatisfying a normal size Galaxy looks next to its king-size sibling? These days more and more of us are supersizing our portions and snacks resulting in expanding waistlines and increasing health problems. With health experts campaigning for better food labelling and healthier portion sizes, we investigate the main danger zones to help you keep your diet on track...

Woman eating chocolate
King-sized bars have been given their marching orders by health experts, and it's no wonder when a king-sized Snickers bar contains more calories than a meal of sirloin steak, potatoes and broccoli. If you need a chocolate fix resist the temptation to buy a big bar and try and stick to dark chocolate which has less fat and sugar in it than milk.

Woman eating a green salad
You have the odd pig-out. So what? Don't beat yourself up about it or, worse, resolve to eat nothing but lettuce for the next five days. You'll probably just end up raiding the biscuit tin again. Remember you need to eat around 3,500 calories to put on even one pound, so the odd over-indulgence won't hurt.

If you have a regular-sized packet of Walkers ready salted crisps (183 cal) as a mid-morning snack, followed by a 250ml can of regular Coke (around 103 calories) and a small bag of Maltesers (180 cals), to stave off the mid-afternoon munchies, you're eating an extra 466 calories per day. This adds up to 3,262 calories in a week which means several extra inches on your muffin top. Stick to snacking on fruit and your figure will thank you for it.

woman drinkgin wine
OK, so shunning booze completely isn't an option many of us are prepared to take, but considering that a large (250ml) glass of wine contains an average of 170 calories per serving, it's enough to make you think. Drinking one of those a day (which is, incidentally, well within the recommended safe drinking levels for women) adds up to a whopping 61,880 extra calories per annum.

Woman bored lookign in the fridge
Phone a friend, go for a walk or get stuck into a good book, but don't eat just because you're bored. It's a sure-fire way of piling on the pounds without you even realising it.

By all means limit 'bad' fats, like those found in processed foods like doughnuts and crisps, but those found in nuts, seeds and fruits like avocado are actually good for you. The monounsaturated fats found in them have beneficial effects on blood fat levels and the circulation. They also keep your skin glowing and healthy.

Microwaved vegetables
Apart from the lure of the salt- and sugar-loaded ready meals, microwaves aren't great when it comes to cooking your vegetables, either. Microwaving has been shown to change the molecular structure of our foods, rendering them next to useless at delivering vital nutrients to our bodies.

Sugar is a big no-no for handbag's health and fitness adviser, Dax Moy. He explains, "Excessive ingestion of processed sugars can contribute to weight gain, fatigue and frequent sleepiness, depression, premature ageing and bloating" - to name but a few. So go easy on the pick 'n' mix...

Smoothie blender
They certainly beat a bar of chocolate in the health stakes, but blending your fruit instead of eating it whole means you lose out on the majority of the fibre content, which means you need more of it to fill you up. Remember, a 250ml glass of orange juice has the same number of calories as a glass of Coke.

bottles of water
Many dieters confuse feelings of thirst with hunger. Our bodies are largely made up of water, so make sure you're getting your fill, at least 1.5 litres a day.
