Contraceptive implant

How does it work?
At present there is only one type of contraceptive implant used in the UK, Implanon. It's about the size of a matchstick and it's fitted under the skin on your upper arm. The contraceptive implant works in the same way as the contraceptive injection, it works by stopping you releasing an egg every month. It also thickens the mucus from your cervix making it difficult for the sperm to swim through it to fertilise the egg and it thins the lining of the womb so it's less likely to accept a fertilised egg.

Is it effective?
Yes, it can be up to 99% effective, but it depends on how old you are, how often you have sex and whether you follow the instructions. You must go to your GP or family planning clinic to have it fitted by a doctor or nurse. It's a long acting reversible contraceptive and these all have a high efficiency rating because you don't have to remember to take them/use them on a daily basis.

Why should I get it?
You don't have to think about contraception for up to three years (when you would need a new one) so you can have uninterrupted sex
You can use it while breastfeeding
The implant stops working the moment it is removed and fertility should return to normal immediately.
If you suffer from heavy periods it may lighten them
It may give you some protection against cancer of the womb
It gives some protection against pelvic inflammatory disease
It is a good method if you cannot use oestrogens (hormones), like those in the combined pill

Why shouldn't I get it?
Your periods may change, in some cases they stop altogether, it's not dangerous but some people prefer the comfort of having a regular period
Other side-effects include acne and headaches
Some women report having tender breasts, bloating, and changes in mood and sex drive
It requires a small procedure to fit and remove it
You can see it under the skin
It is not suitable for women using enzyme-inducing drugs
The contraceptive implant does not protect you against sexually transmitted infections, so you may have to use condoms as well.
