handbag reviews: Vacunaut

What's the story?

Vacunaut, favoured by Robbie Williams and Anna Friel, is a device that looks like a wetsuit, which you wear while hooked up to a treadmill. As you walk at a brisk pace for 40 minutes, the device adds vacuum pressure, which encourages bloodflow to the midriff. This bloodflow is enriched with fatty acids, which is then encouraged through the venous system to the working muscles to be used as fuel. Three 40-minute sessions per week over four weeks are recommended for optimum results.

Perfect for...

People who are reasonably fit, but just have trouble losing that stubborn tummy fat. In my case, I had a vintage dress with a miniscule waist that I wanted to fit into for a wedding. As it's non-invasive, it's completely natural, and for some, an alternative to liposuction.

How long before I get bored?

There's a little more to Vacunaut than just walking on the treadmill. I'm told to avoid carbohydrates for four hours after my treatment and after 8pm. Alcohol and fizzy drinks are also to be avoided on treatment days. The carb thing I manage for the most part, with the exception of a few nights when I ate dinner after 8 and I thought I would faint if I didn't have some sort of carbohydrate. Alcohol was for the most part okay, except for the odd day when work drinks or dinner with a friend also fell on the day I had a treatment. Sadly, my willpower caved on a sunshine-y night at the pub catching up with a long-lost friend.

Best bit...

After two weeks, clothes felt noticeably looser and I didn't feel as bloated. By the end of the four weeks I managed to lose 6cm from my waist, 3cm from my belly, and 4cm from my hips. And the dress? Fit like a dream...

Worst bit...

You look like an absolute plonker in the gym when doing your treatments. If you're not used to denying yourself, you will need to work on the carb/alcohol restrictions and plan accordingly.

Is it worth my hard-earned cash?

At £400 for 12 sessions, it's not cheap, but if you're determined to lose that midriff and can dedicate yourself to it, it's worth it.

Location, location, location...

Vacunaut machines are available to buy for home use and treatments are available nationwide. I had my sessions at Destination, 42-48 Great Portland Street, London W1. Tel: 020 7636 4477. For more information on Vacunaut visit www.vacunaut.co.uk .
