Trendwatching: beauty in 2010
Purple power and a step back in time

This year sees several new hairstyles heavily influenced by looks sported on the spring/summer catwalks. Our top tip is long wavy hair inspired by the 1940s film noir style, with firm but not curly waves and an off-centre or side part.

For make-up, watch the smoky eye trend of winter give way to misty purple eye shadows, from soft lilac to stronger blocked colour. Purple lipstick will also be popular right through until summer. Prince would be proud...

The fashion tip
Get nude or get power dressing

We're not suggesting you turn naturist in 2010 but simply let cut and drapery guide your buying eye, rather than the eye popping block colours that were last summer's style. Spring/Summer 2010 is all about opaque ice cream shades such as peach, nutmeg, bleached white and grey as seen on the catwalks of designers such as Stella McCartney and Fendi. You should, of course, shed garments at the first hint of sun. It's the British way, after all.

Alternatively, a strong look this year is the glossy Eighties Dynasty approach. Think power dressing with big, sharp shoulders, stilettos and sheer hosiery.

The travel must-do
From a designer Moroccan riad to exotic Istanbul

You'll find the winter sun in Marrakech, a city that combines ancient charm with modern opulence. We recommend making Dar Les Cigognes your base, a former merchant's house that's been transformed into a stylish and intimate riad. Discover it behind a discreet door deep in the city's medina - the perfect spot to strike out and enjoy the city's myriad delights.

Alternatively, book yourself a trip to Istanbul, the city where East and West collide, and somewhere that offers respite from the chilly climes of Britain. The bars and clubs are fantastic, and you can relax in a traditional hammam the next day - soaking and scrubbing away the night's excesses. For true luxury, take a room at the A'jia Hotel on the banks of the Bosphorus.

Summertime sounds
A shiny electropop princess and a future festival favourite....
Step back Lady GaGa and move over La Roux, because Ellie Goulding is spearheading the new wave of sun-flecked electropop. This 23 year old from Hereford is already the name most talked about by British music industry heads with her debut single, ‘Under The Sheets' - a brilliantly instant hit of feel good electronica - channelling the likes of Bjork, Imogen Heap and even Madonna. Fire it up and let the sunshine in.

Temposhark is another name to watch this year, with their forthcoming album ‘Threads' providing a perfect slice of pure pop that joins the dots between 80s synth sounds and cutting edge R&B. They will be massive at the festivals this year, for sure.
