Having worked with the likes of Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman and Elle 'The Body' Macpherson we are sure Tara will have some fab advice for us and our stressed out tresses...
Hi TaraPlease help! I know this is a pretty general question - but what's the sure-fire fail-safe way to ensure frizz-free locks? The rain and damp weather leaves my hair so frizzy!
B from London
Hi B,
As a woman with curly hair I totally feel your problem! You need to put a serum in your hair for sure - try my Tara Smith Base Coat Serum because it doesn't leave a residue (a lot of them do which puts people off) and closes the cuticle. It's difficult without seeing your hair type - for curly hair I'd then use a cream curl product like Pureology or Redken Rough Paste to keep curls separate and stop them from frizzing. After the hair's set, Lee Stafford's de humidifier is great for all hair types. If you're out and it starts to frizz, spray on my Tara Smith Top Coat Glosser (£4.99 from Tesco) and push back into shape - it'll leave it shiny and frizz free.
Dear Tara
This may found a little strange - but really should women over 40 have long hair? Is it acceptable in the style stakes these days to be over 40 and still have long locks?
Thanks! Karen
Hi Karen,
It is 100% acceptable! If it's healthy, and has a good cut and shape it can look amazing. Hair loses elasticity as you get older and can look lustre free and lifeless, in which case it does need a good cut, and this is where the myth that women can't have long hair past 40 comes from. But with the right products and tlc hair will look fabulous!
Hi Tara
I have hair that is fine and flyaway but there is so much of it, meaning it is difficult to dry, straighten or style in general. Usually resulting in it being tied up into a ponytail! Very boring! Are there any methods to make it more manageable? Like getting layers or feathering? Or perhaps even some different methods to drying or straightening?
Any tips would be appreciated, Thanks, Lisa
Hi Lisa
I wouldn't suggest having any feathering - it'll make it look more fine! Maybe have a longer bob or have a blunter cut to give the ends more definition. A fringe could work for you depending on your face shape - consult your hairdresser. It's worth paying for a top stylist because they'll give you good advice before a big change which can otherwise be daunting. If you're always tying it back consider a shorter look - you're not going to lose anything because it's always out of sight anyway. Victoria Beckham's pob is a good cut for anyone who would like to keep a longer looking cut at the front without all the hassle of misbehaving hair at the back... when you've had this cut, you either re-grow the back or go a step shorter - like Victoria's crop. Layers are a possibility, but I'd suggest a good consultation with a hairdresser, and don't feel you have to rush into a drastic cut on the same day, you can come back another day when you've thought about it.
Dear Tara
If I had to choose one style to try and achieve for this season what would it be? I currently have long blonde hair and am not sure what style to do to get a new and interesting look. I currently wear it down on good days and just pulled back on the bad hair days! Should I be attempting an up do or getting some darker colour added? Any ideas?
Thanks in advance Susie
Hi Susie,
You could do both of those things! Because we're coming to winter going dark is a brilliant way to change your look without cutting your hair drastically. And you could just go a darker or warmer blonde, it doesn't need to be a full blonde to brunette change. It's essential to go to a salon with a specialist colourist - for organic colour I recommend Karine Jackson Hair and Beauty, and I love Vicky Thea at Daniel Galvin as well, they're two of my favourites. You can still experiment with updos, in which case it's nice to see hair put up off centre so try rolling or pinning. or think about having a fringe which is right on trend.
Hi Tara
My hair is thin and lazy. I've tried almost every volumising spray, gel and mousse on the market. Help! The only thing that works is when I leave my hair alone and run my figure tips on my scalp for volume every minute during the day! My hair will only hold a curl for a minute. What should I do to get volume? And keep it!
Thanks Erica
Hi Erica
A new style might help, and I'd recommend Redken or Nioxin root lift spray - section hair and spray in right at the roots. Take your time as you style it and make sure hair's really dry before giving the roots a blast of hairspray. Use my Feed the Root shampoo and conditioner to give hair a good base to start with. Massage the head regularly to stimulate follicles as this will help give it more vavoom..., If it's really fine have a root lift perm - this will just give you lift at the root rather than a curl. Karine Jackson does an organic version that's ammonia free. Good luck!
