salon etiquette
By Donna Chapman
\r\n\r\nThe A-listers have their hair stylists on speed dial. For the rest of us cultivating an in-salon relationship of mutual esteem is the best we can hope for. So how do you get the most from your appointment? We ask those working at the cutting edge.

\"If you\'re trying a salon for the first time a good tip is to just book a blow-dry on your first visit so that you can suss it out before committing yourself to anything more technically demanding.\"

\"Having a definite idea of the look you want is essential. A vague verbal description is more open to misinterpretation than if you take along a few pictures as guidance. If your hairdresser knows exactly what you want\' before you\'ve opened your mouth proceed with caution with this type of human steamroller.\"

\"Arriving on time is often all we ask. Turn up late especially early in the day and we run late for everyone else which isn\'t fair on them. Not turning up at all is downright rude and is a black mark no amount of tipping will ever erase. If you can\'t come phone and cancel so we can give your appointment to someone else.\"

\"Tipping is optional and down to personal discretion. Generally clients tend to tip their stylist, colourist and assistants after having a service with them and the amount is often dependent on the quality of the service they have received. Anything from a £3 tip upward is the norm.\"

\"If you feel it\'s all going wrong - for instance they\'re cutting off more than you expected - get them to stop and review proceedings. That way something can be done about it. However, if it\'s more of a you\'ve gone home and you hate it scenario, try living with your new look a few days and if you\'re still not happy go back to the salon and discuss your options.\"

\"Hairdressers are social people and as such relish a good chat with clients. However, some cuts demand more concentration than others - a bob for instance. If you want a natter with your stylist, feel free, but remember not to be too animated when talking - if you keep moving your head, nodding etc, it makes the hairdresser\'s job more difficult. Also when the hairdryer is on, it\'s sometimes difficult to hear properly, so speak up or wait until your style is finished!\"

hair colouring
\"Don\'t wash your hair and particularly don\'t massage your scalp before a global colour (i.e. a colour painted on from roots to ends) as this can encourage sensitivity and irritation during application. I recommend an in-salon intensive masque or conditioning treatment immediately prior to a colour service - this evens out porosity and effectively fills in any holes in the hair.\"

\"It could be that you\'re so used to each other that you\'ve got into a routine. Establishing a rapport with your hairdresser will give a better insight into the real you and encourage him to be more adventurous with your hair if you\'re into fashion or to stick to the classics if you\'re more conservative.\"

\"Hairdressers appreciate that times are hard. I\'d say that shampoo and conditioner are the things you can\'t scrimp on because they\'re the foundation for healthy hair. If you can\'t stretch to both, buy a shampoo and a deep conditioning treatment instead use this weekly and a cheaper conditioner daily. Also think about rationing the amounts you use, often it\'s too much, salon formulas are pretty concentrated.\"

\"Be open to advice from your hairdresser even if it\'s painful having a reality check as to what will and wont suit you. A style is often a work in progress evolving over several appointments particularly if you\'re growing out a crop, layers or a fringe so be patient and don\'t lose sight of your ultimate goal.\"
