Classic celebrity hair cuts

Great hair-dos never die, but are rediscovered time and time again.

Audrey Hepburn1. The Audrey Hepburn crop
Undoubtedly the most gamine actress of her age, Audrey was like a beautiful gazelle in an era of pneumatic platinum-blonde starlets. In early movie roles such as those she played in Roman Holiday and Sabrina Fair, a star was born thanks to her elfin cut with its short, blunt fringe that complemented heavy stylised eyebrows, huge eyes and delicate bone structure to perfection. Suddenly 'tomboy chic' was the height of femininity and all the rage in the '50s.

Get the look: This is a timeless style because of its simplicity. Short hair can be very versatile, and urchin cuts such as this can be adapted to suit most face shapes. A feathery fringe will soften the effect and can be pushed to one side or dressed into a quiff for a brand new look.

In your kit bag: Brunettes often struggle to achieve healthy-looking lustre. John Frieda's Brilliant Brunette is a range of 12 cleansing, conditioning and styling products with multi-dimensional shine technology, including mild organic acids typically found in apples and milk.

Copycat styles: Jean Seberg, Halle Berry.

2. Meg Ryan
She may not be Parky's favourite interviewee, but we're mad about the Meg look, even after all this time. The 'kooky' sliced into and shattered shape with its heavy layers, side parting and slices of buttery colour and darker tones is still top of the crops and much imitated by women of all ages. Subtle changes in length and shades of blonde have kept the look fresh and contemporary almost a decade on, and the magic combination of sexy and cute remains, whichever side of the bed the actress has got out of that morning!

Get the look: Tops for understated glamour, this is a style that can be worn groomed or tousled. It's such an adaptable shape that it should suit almost anybody with essentially straight locks. To style, the hair should be rough-dried until almost completely dry then, using a large round brush, straighten it out, flicking the ends outwards. Blast with the hairdryer to give that dishevelled look.

In your kit bag: Rub Wella System Professional Mattmaxx styling cream (£10.35, call 0800 3283400) through the ends to create definition and separation.

Copycat styles: Lulu, SATC's Cynthia Nixon.

Brigitte Bardot3. Brigitte Bardot
The original sex kitten was created when she went from pretty brunette ingénue to a bikini-clad brilliant blonde. BB began a sexual revolution with her provocative roles in French cinema from the mid-'50s onwards. A face that launched a thousand bouffant hairstyles, smoky eyes and very pale lipstick - but alas not sunblock - she was years ahead of her time.

Get the look: Long blonde 'undone' locks are incredibly hot right now and the key is body and shine. Apply a volumiser to damp hair and comb through before blow-drying. Have long hair trimmed regularly and always condition after each wash. Backcombing at the roots will add the necessary retro vibe.

In your kit bag: Transform washing your hair into a spicy experience using Origins Ginger Up Aromatic Shampoo and Aromatic Conditioner (£10 each, call 0800 7314039).

Copycat styles: Claudia Schiffer, Kylie.

 4. Kate Moss
The ultimate boho-babe, Kate did more for the geometric bob in 2000 than anyone since Vidal Sassoon in the '60s. Her asymmetric platinum version spawned many imitations and helped make a safe, classic style cutting edge for the first time since Linda Evangelista was the super. Kate's grown her hair again, demonstrating how important it is not to get stuck in a rut and that no style is forever.

Get the look:
The bob suits most face shapes, except for the really rounded. The best texture is fine, straight hair, but if it has a bit of natural movement to it it can be straightened out while blow-drying using a radial brush.

In your kit bag:
For a really pin-straight finish use ghd Professional Mini Styler (£85, call 01943 603 000 or visit www.ghdhair.com). Especially for short hair, the thinner plates make quick work of straightening small sections and fringes.

Copycat styles:
Davina McCall, Kate Thornton.

Sarah Jessica Parker5. Sarah Jessica Parker
Up, down, straight or curly, SJP is an uptown girl with the lowdown on transatlantic style. Blessed with a head of enviable natural curls, she has helped propel texture back onto the must-have list - if anyone can get us to throw out those straighteners, it's her.

Get the look:
Avoid poodle-style overload by keeping the crown area flat, with curls forming from just above the tips of the ears. One of the easiest ways to achieve ringlets is to plait hair while damp, allow to dry naturally and then unpick. If you've a long face like SJP, go for an off-centre parting.

In your kitbag:
Aveda Be Curly (£14, call 020 7297 6350) can be used to define curls, tame frizz and intensify shine. The wheat protein blend expands when hair is wet, then retracts when it's dry to lock in curls and waves.

Copycat styles:
Debra Messing, Nicole Kidman.

Jennifer Aniston6. Jennifer Aniston
Best friends with her straightening irons post 'the Rachel', Jennifer's long, sleek style has also been endlessly copied, as has her transformation from chestnut brown to a mixture of honey and caramel tones. A deceptively simple look, but difficult to achieve such spectacular results without hair being in peak condition.

Get the look:
This is a high-maintenance look for anyone with less than straight hair, and in-salon hair retexturing processes are necessary if you want such pin-straight effects. Repeated use of straightening irons can compromise condition and it was a smart move when Jennifer had her hair cut to bob length a few years back.

In your kitbag: Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Daily Shampoo (from £3.50, call 01296 390555) and Super Skinny Daily Treatment (from £4.95) will help smooth the way to a silky-sleek finish.

Copycat styles: Lucy Liu, Demi Moore.
