Hair Icon - Kate Moss

Kate day

This month, we urge you all to ditch the straightening irons and concentrate your efforts on teasing those tresses into some seriously sexy, supermodel-style, beachy bangs. The queen of effortless cool, Kate Moss – we salute you!

Rae Palmer, hairdressing hotshot and UK L'Oreal colour specialist, loves the way la Moss keeps her style simple and similar for both day and night. 'To achieve this famous shift from a daytime to an evening look with minimum effort, styling products are really important. To achieve versatility, it's important not to use anything that's too sticky. Smoothing creams are ideal, such as L'Oréal Techni Art Liss Control, (£10.50, 0800 0726699)' she continues, 'this product is great for giving body and smoothing the hair, and gives a good strong hold. When you damp your hair down to redo for the evening, products like these reactivate and your hair won't knot up.' Sounds simple eh? Here's how to do it...

Copy Kate's natural, sexy, undone daytime look by washing your hair and, after towel drying, apply a generous drop of the L'Oréal smoothing cream. 'It's really important to make sure hair is nearly dry – not soaking wet or practically dry,' adds Rae, 'then mix with some serum for shine - Redken Glass is perfect (£14.50 , 0800 444 880) – and comb through using a large-toothed comb.' Comb your locks straight back, no flat parting yet, and smooth. Then, Rae advises putting your head upside down and shaking your hair from roots to end, 'even if your hair is naturally dead straight this technique will encourage the hair to wave,' she says. Toss your hair back and gently scrunch, lifting the hair in your hands as it dries, 'but don't use a hairdryer!' adds Rae.

Your natural parting should just fall into place, but to encourage it, particularly a Moss-style, uber-cool centre parting for daytime, push your hair at the crown of your head with your fingers. 'Don't comb the parting in,' warns Rae, 'you'll lose the natural undone effect.' And remember, Kate's long layers add much-needed body to the hair, so to successfully pull off this style you'll need a good shaped cut, as Rae points out, 'if your hair is too heavy with no layers, it will take ages to dry and drop too quickly.' No good if you want to work this look in the evening too!

In terms of colouring, Kate has gorgeous, natural, sunkissed highlights in her hair, 'the weaves of cool beige blonde and sunny golden blonde graduate through the top parting into a very light cool icy blonde framing her face. These different sunlights and soft tones are not too contrasting and blend wonderfully with her natural hair, meaning any re-growth doesn't look unnatural.' Rae suggests checking out L'Oréal Platinium from your colourist, as it's made with beeswax it leaves your hair and highlights in fantastic condition, 'just ask your hairdresser/colourist to use 3 or 4 colours and a graduation technique.'

Rae describes Kate's evening look as the perfect example of the 'new straight' – poker straight hair with hot irons is sooo last season! 'Kate definitely has smoother hair, not from hot irons, but from a big round brush. GHD do great styling brushes (from £9.25) that will straighten and smooth but still give the feeling of an undone style.' The hair still has natural movement and great shine, so don't overload on the hair spray. Wearing the hair over to the side, rather than in a centre parting has a sexy, more sophisticated feel better suited to an evening look.

To transform to this look, Rae suggests 'using a water spray and finely misting your hair, making sure you have brushed or smoothed your hair from the daytime look first. Your hair should still feel dry but have a slight dampness to it. Then brush hair forward on top to get your middle parting out and take over more to the side. Again, let the natural parting fall, clip up your hair with section clips, then blow dry big sections, aiming the nozzle down the hair and smoothing round the brush.' When you've done each section, let it cool around the brush before you take it out to help hold the style. Rae advises doing your fringe and the front section first 'around the brush coming forward' as these dry quicker than the rest of your tresses. When you have finished the back, blast your hair with the hairdryer on a cool heat to sex up your blow dry. Finish with some more serum or gloss shine spray. 'Camera Ready by TIGI Catwalk (£10.45) is fantastic for that stylish finish' adds Rae. And there you have it - a super-sexy, supermodel style worthy of any fashionista's locks.
