Hair today, gone tomorrow? After publically being fired from American X Factor, Cheryl's reinvented herself with a new hairstyle.
Whether youve been dumped; done the dumping yourself; lost your job; been offered a new one; had a fight with your best friend or had a baby, chances are your first stop will be the hairdressers. Because for reasons unknown, women rarely make a momentous life change without upgrading their haircut.
No-one understands this better than Cheryl Cole, whos just been publically fired from the American X Factor, and (if the rumors are to be believed) is on the verge of a reconciliation with ex husband Ashley Cole. She could skulk off to lick her wounds in private, but that wouldnt be very showbiz. Instead, shes chopped off her trademark brunette locks and swapped them for an edgy(ish) blonde bob. Possibly while her manager ran around in the background screaming will no-one think of the LOreal contract???
I cant say I blame Cheryl theres nothing to take the heat off your personal failings like a new barnet, particularly when at least 30 per cent of your career has been defined by your hair anyway. But the question still remains when women want to reinvent themselves, why do they do it from the hair down?
Handags beauty editor Louise OConnell thinks she may have the answer: I always say that our hair is closer to our head than we think, and by that I mean it is connected to our psyche. A bad hair day makes us feel down, good hair makes us feel happy and confident, and cutting our hair or getting it dramatically coloured, helps us move on both physically and emotionally; we feel like a new woman and we look like one too.
What's more Cheryl, like Victoria Beckham, knows that one new hair cut/colour equals column inches and, usually, favourable press - always a good thing when you have a new product/album/career to promote. Remember how Chezza dyed her hair red just as she got her group of girls to mentor on the X Factor last year? Then there was the sexy, wavy bob as she went solo, and who can forget the hair-raising big hair as she debuted as a judge on American X Factor.
So thats the expert opinion. But what we really want to know is what do you think of the new haircut? Does this mark the beginning of a new era for Cheryl? Or now that shes cut off her hair has she lost her magical powers, like Samson? And whos next for the chop Kate Middleton?
