From Halle Berry to Tyra Banks, black celebrities have been dying their hair blonde for years. To find out the secret of their blonde ambition we spoke to Kathryn Longmuir from Ishoka Hair and Beauty to get her expert tips on colouring afro hair.
How long can it take to turn afro hair blonde?
Depending on the shade of blonde the time can vary, but it will definitely take a few sittings. I would suggest a semi-permanent or quasi-permanent technique to achieve a successful blonde, which would usually take one and a half hours. If however the client prefers to have a permanent tint or a full head of highlights to achieve their chosen colour, this alone can take around two hours for colouring and half an hour for the cut to ensure the hair is kept healthy.
I always stress that a thorough consultation is essential before getting your hair coloured. And that there is enough time allowed for your chosen technique.

How to keep blonde afro hair in good condition
Regular maintenance is essential so that hair doesn’t become dry or snap. Good shampoo and conditioner to look after afro hair and conditioning products to lock in the colour too. You hairdresser will be able to advise you what is best for your hair, but I think Wella SP Colour Saver Shampoo and Conditioner are really good. They close down the cuticle to cut out any frizz and maintain not only a healthy shine but your colour will appear vibrant for much longer.

Is there anything you shouldn’t do when dying afro hair blonde?
Never use bleach! This can cause a huge amount of stress to the hair and result in breakage, which will take a long time to repair. Semi-permanents and quasi-permanents are safer as they are not as harsh on the hair. I would say if you want a more dramatic look then try hair wefts or extensions.
