On trial... thickening sprays

Summer is in the air, and this month, it's in the hair too. Typical summer hair is all about natural beauty, body and bounce, so we challenged handbag.com forum regular Carol McDonald, 20, an Accounting Student from Glasgow, to test five of the best body boosters on the market. 'I love hair products and have far too many!' says Carol, 'But my hair always tends to go a bit flat at the roots, so I was more than happy to try out these products to see which gave my hair more thickness and body.'

Tigi Bedhead Queen for a Day Thickening Spray
£10.50

'I was immediately attracted to the glamorous pink packaging so this was the first product I tried. It certainly lived up to its name and left my hair gorgeously thick and full of body. It has a nice fruity scent and only required five or six sprays in at the roots of my damp hair for the full effect. The spray is light on the hair and doesn't weigh it down. It is now a definite staple in my hair care routine!'

Bumble & Bumble Thickening Spray
£18.50

'I've heard lots of great things about Bumble and Bumble but never used any of the range, so I was excited to try this one out. I really liked this product as it is a thickening spray and heat protector in one. It sprayed a nice light mist onto the roots of my hair and it gave lots of lift and volume. A bottle seems like it would last a really long time. The only thing I didn't like about this product was the scent.'

Aveda Pure Abundance Volumizing Hair Spray
£12

'The Aveda Volumizing Hair Spray uses extracts of acacia to give volume and marshmallow to give a natural looking hold. I used this on dry hair as directed and its smells absolutely devine! I can't stop smelling my hair when I've sprayed it on! About eight sprays all over my hair was good enough to give lift and hold any fly-aways in place. I use this the day after I have washed my hair to give it extra volume and body.'

John Frieda Thickening Fix It Fast Spray
£4.49

'I'm a fan of John Frieda's infamous Hair Serum, so I expected big things from this product. I used this a day after I had washed my hair as it claims to 'instantly revitalise and add volume, lift and shine to dry hair'. So it had a lot to live up to. It did boost the volume in my hair and gives excellent hold but didn't add much shine. I think this was due to it sitting slightly heavier on the hair. I would recommend this as it is a great budget option.'

Charles Worthington Results Full Volume Great Body
£4.19

'I really liked the bright funky orange packaging. I sprayed this onto towel-dried hair and sections when blow-drying my hair. A little goes a long way and you have to be very light-handed. I found this product to be sticky on my hair and didn't like the scent, which was disappointing.'
