Cos Sakkas, Toni & Guy's International Artistic Director, scooped the coveted title of London Hairdresser of the Year 2008 at the British Hairdressing Awards, meaning he's officially the best coiffeur in London, whilst Jo O’Neill, Toni & Guy's Technical Artistic Director joins him to answer your questions on colour.

cos sakkas Hi Cos

I have wavy/curly dark brown hair, I usually have to straighten my bangs and sometimes I like to straighten some of my hair and leave some wavy. The problem is I end up having split ends very often, so how can I still manage to straighten my hair but keep it healthy?

Thanks very much in advance!

Initially you will need to ensure that you are using products to protect your hair and also adding moisture to avoid dry hair - the Salon Professional range label.m available at all TONI&GUY salons includes preparation products such as label.m Heat Protection Spray and label.m Protein Spray, which together protect against heat damage and simultaneously nourish the hair.  Using an enriched conditioner or using a leave-in conditioner is also advisable when straightening your hair, try label.m Leave-in Conditioner or label.m Honey and Oat Conditioner.

Apart from using products can I suggest that if you have naturally wavy hair, which is very much on-trend at the moment, why not have best of both worlds?  During the week wear your hair curly, you can use curl enhancing products such as label.m Curl Cream, remixed with label.m Leave-in Conditioner (for extra moisture) and let your hair dry naturally, or gently scrunch and diffuse the hair.  Then for special occasions, or the weekends straighten your hair, you will notice the improvement in the condition almost instantly.

Don't forget as well the above regular cuts every six to eight weeks keep your hair looking fresh and helps to avoid split ends.

Hi Cos

My hairdresser often cuts my hair shorter than I want.  The agreed 3/4" at consultation ends up being 2" on leaving the salon.  I go for regular trims, so find this very annoying. I have also experienced this with other hairdressers too, how can I do to avoid this happening in the future?

Thanks, Sue

Hi Sue.  Finding the perfect hairdresser is kind of like finding a best friend, they really need to understand your hair, personal image and what you want to achieve.  All I can suggest is to be even clearer during your consultation about the length and letting your hairdresser know that you are trying to grow your hair can help them to understand that you literally just want a trim.  Otherwise keep searching and ask friends for recommendations.

Hi Cos

Recently I have been taking all sorts of supplements as my hair has not grown in about 3 years.  I have taken Boitin tablets for 6 months, Sea Kelp for 6 months on and off and I have just finished hairvit tablets but still nothing has occurred.

I have searched all on the internet and gained information, thus the reasoning why I took the tablets. I know there is a shampoo called 'Noixin' but I am reluctant to purchase this, as all else has failed.

I look after my hair by conditioning it all the time, along with a bi-weekly longer conditioning treatment.  I have tried having my hair trimmed to make it grow.... But still alas nothing!  Can you help?

Thanks, Suz

Hi Suz.  Just to make you fully aware that your hair will never stop growing, sometimes it gets to a length that makes it harder to notice, but rest assure it is still getting longer.  But remember, everyone's hair will grow at different rates.

Your diet is such an important aspect when it comes to the condition of your hair and eating plenty of fresh fruit and fresh vegetables is a must.  Also, stress can affect the rate of hair growth, so regular exercise can help to eliminate any tension or stress you might be under.  Good luck.

jo o'neillHi Jo,

I have coloured my hair a burgundy colour for many years and before that I coloured it blonde.  This summer I went blond again but, had a professional do it.  The professional had to weave it in slowly because I was so dark.  So it took many times going to the salon.  (Every 6 to 8 weeks). Now my hair is breaking off really badly and I need to know what I can do to fix my problem.  I use Pureology conditioner to help it and have stopped using the straightener but I am worried that if I keep bleaching it it will all fall out and if I don't my hair will just look terrible with the dark roots (I am naturally a brown colour). Do I need to go a little darker to match the roots?  Help! Karen

Hi Karen.  You can still be a blonde and have well conditioned hair, but just not a platinum blonde.  There are different arrays of products that can be used on your hair - high lift tints, semi permanents, permanents etc, which are far gentler and deposit conditioning agents, making the hair appear richer and shinier.  You must also ensure you are using the right shampoo and conditioner to help repair your hair.  Try label.m Treatment Shampoo and label.m Moisturising Conditioner, then before blow-drying use label.m Protein Spray for extra nourishment.  Choosing a shade closer to your natural colour always helps with the appearance of roots, you could always opt for a blend of high-lights to enhance light and reflection.

Hello Jo

I am a natural blonde who dyes my hair very dark brown with the home kits, I have been dying it for six years. I now want to go back to blonde as I feel that I should not dye it for ever. I really don't know what to do. I did go to a hairdresser; they said it would cost about £500 as it would have to be stripped. Please have you any advice

Thank you so much

Dee

Hi Dee.  You definitely need to put this in the hands of a professional, stripping, or as TONI&GUY refer to it ‘cleansing' the hair needs to be done gradually, therefore it can be fairly expensive.  If you need guidance on where to go or recommendation on an experienced technician please call our TONI&GUY Academy on 02078360606.

To make an appointment with Cos, Jo or one of the team at the Covent garden salon call 020 7240 7342.
