Hairstyle guide - fringes

One of the quickest ways to update your hairstyle is to add a fringe. Somehow they never fall off fashion's radar, with short crops, long curls and sexy updos all complimenting a fringe perfectly.

If you don't want a blunt fringe like we've seen on Dannii Minogue and Keira Knightley over the years, then go for a side-sweeping finish that can look just as glam and very flattering. A blunt fringe can also add wow factor to the right hairstyle instantly; celebrities like Alexandra Burke and Jessica Alba are wearing their fringes poker straight in the evenings and messy and choppy during the day, showing how versatile the fringe can be.

With Christmas and New Year upon us it's the perfect time to opt for a new 'do, add some new colour or simply refresh your style. Jamie Stevens (appointments at 020 7235 0110) from How To Look Good Naked told us, "There are lots of different types and styles of fringes, and trying to find the style that suits you best can sometimes be hard. There are wispy fringes, solid fringes, thick fringes, thin fringes, side fringes, long and short fringes, heavy fringes and many more types, but it depends on your face shape. Every face shape suits different fringe styles.

If you have a square shaped face, a long, wispy layered fringe will round your face shape off a little bit. Add a few small layers to the front of your face to soften the edges, giving you a more rounded look.

If you have an oval shaped face, you have the best shaped face there is! Oval faces suit any style of fringe, any length, shape and heaviness. An oval face is very versatile, so you can have fun experimenting with different styles.

A heart shaped face needs a fringe that will soften the long, prominent chin, so you need a blunt, heavier, sharp fringe to make the face appear more in proportion.

Long, pointy shaped faces need a side fringe that is slightly angled to soften the face shape, and putting the hair in a side parting will shorten the length of the face.

If you have a round face, you need a soft, layered fringe that is slightly angled to the side to add a little bit of length to the face. Short fringes also add length to rounded shaped faces. Avoid long fringes as this can emphasis the rounded face and can look too harsh.

Some people feel more confident with a fringe, as it feels like you have something to hide behind. If you have quite a large forehead a fringe is good for disguising it. A prominent forehead can look emphasised if you do not have a fringe and if you wear your hair scraped back at the front, so think about a soft, angled layered fringe worn to the side to soften the face."
