A new study shows that a low-calorie diet could be the key to containing breast cancer and stopping it from spreading to other organs.

The research by the department of radiation oncology at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia shows that calorie restriction could prevent triple negative breast cancer (the most agressive and least responsive form of cancer) from spreading to other organs by strengthening the tissue around the tumour.

To get the results, the team of scientists fed one group of mice a third less than another, and found that the microbes that increase cancer were decreased when mice were treated with both radiation and a low-calorie diet.

Plus the mice produced a higher level of protein which toughened the tissue around the tumour, containing it.

The findings could hopefully lead to a new drug being developped to treat cancer.
