New research has found that drinking wine in moderation may be associated with a lower risk of developing depression.

According to research published in Biomed Central's open access journal, BMC Medicine, drinking a glass of wine a day could have protective effects on depression in the same way as heart disease.

While drinking heavily is still linked to mental health problems, the study followed over 5,500 light to moderate drinkers for seven years and found that those who had two to seven small glasses of wine a week had the lowest rates of depression.

The participants had medical examinations and mental health checks every year, and none of them suffered from depression of alcohol-related problems at the beginning of the study.

'Lower amounts of alcohol intake might exert protection in a similar way to what has been observed for coronary heart disease, explained Professor Miguel A. Martínez-González, from the University of Navarra in Spain, senior author of the paper.

'In fact, it is believed that depression and coronary heart disease share some common disease mechanisms,' he says.

Not much of a wine drinker? Don't reach for the voddy hoping for the same benefits – this is vino specific. The research links to previous studies that have found non-alcoholic compounds in the wine may protect certain areas of the brain.
