Have you ever started a diet on Monday, only to give it up by Friday? If you're nodding guiltily, you're not alone.

New research commissioned by Alpro shows that two out of five of us quit our new eating regime within seven days, with only one out of 20 of us actually seeing our diet through to the end.

But there's no need to cry into your takeaway. There ARE ways to improve your chances of success and it all starts with being realistic, says says Alpro dietician Kate Arthur.

"Any diet that promises you'll shed huge amounts of weight in just a few weeks will be impossible to follow for any length of time," says Kate. "To sustain a diet, you simply need to eat in a balanced way, exercise, and allow yourself a treat now and again."

Kate suggests making some small tweaks to your lifestyle to improve your chances of success.

7 WAYS TO KEEP YOUR DIET ON TRACK

1. Try to plan meals in advance

This will ensure you have more control over what you're eating and don't get carried away in the supermarket or restaurant when you're feeling hungry.

2. Reshape your plate

Make sure that two-thirds of your diet is made up of plant-based foods such as dairy alternatives, nuts, seeds, beans, whole grain carbs and plenty of fruits and vegetables, and one-third from animal protein - including meat, chicken,  fish and eggs. This balance will help keep you fuller for longer, and limit to occasions when you feel the need to binge.

3. Have a snack

Regular snacking is okay, but you just need to make sure you are snacking on the right things – choose protein-rich snacks, such as a handful of almonds or a plant based soya yogurt  to curb those hunger cravings.

4. Don't be dense

Limit the amount of high-fat, high-sugar foods you eat – these play havoc with your blood sugar levels and mean you're more likely to get bad cravings.

5. Keep a food diary

Confessing to everything you're eating and drinking will help keep you on track. It's also helpful to look over it at the weekend, to remind yourself not to undo all your hard work.

6. Tailor your eating plan

Think about your work, lifestyle and budget – and decide how you can eat to support it. If you factor your meal times and meal choices around your life, food becomes a lifestyle change that you can sustain forever.

7. Simple swaps

Rather than worry about cutting everything out, make simple swaps to your daily routine. Swap cow's milk on your cereal for almond milk, or use a sweetener in your tea instead of sugar.
