5 quick and easy ways to improve your heart health
Your morning coffee is loaded with antioxidants
Coffee is packed with antioxidants that can help to reduce inflammation in the body. This is a risk factor for heart disease in later life, so one or two cups of the brown stuff everyday isn't a bad idea.
Beetroot juice can reduce high blood pressure
Next time you make a healthy salad grate some beetroot over the top. Researchers from the London School of Medicine believe that beetroot juice can drastically reduce high blood pressure, making it a secret weapon against heart disease and stroke.
Reduce your intake of salt
The average Brit eats about 9.5g of salt per day, but the government wants us to cut this down to 6g. High levels of salt can make your blood sugar sky rocket, increasing your chances of cardio conditions. To work out the 'real' salt content in your food, experts recommend multiplying the sodium content on the packet by 2.5.
Yellow, orange and red coloured foods can reduce heart disease
Eating certain foods can reduce your risk of heart disease because of high levels of antioxidant beta-carotene (which is also shown to minimize your risk of developing breast cancer). Butternut squash, cranberries, peppers and carrots are great sources, but flax seeds, walnuts, oily fish and avocados are also great additions to any health-conscious diet.
Good oral hygiene can improve heart health
Forgetting to brush your teeth or floss properly has been linked to heart disease in some recent scientific studies. Chronic inflammation in the lining of the gums is thought to start a chain reaction of damage throughout the body, with little bursts of bacteria slowly seeping into your blood stream. Toothpaste, floss, mouthwash, twice a day.
