Goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow has highlighted our national magnesium deficiency claiming it's one of the biggest reasons why we're tired, cranky and craving sugar all the time.

Okay, so she's also spoken about cleanse hallucinations and starvation diets but we think she's on to something now. Hopefully.

Amazingly, nutritionists agree with her. Find out more below...

What is magnesium?

Magnesium is a chemical element that plays a vital role in maintaining the body's energy levels.

70% of women are deficient in because it's stripped from food during the refining process, according to studies. This can lead to headaches, neck tension, PMT, sugar cravings and fluid retention.

Wholegrains are high in magnesium

Wholegrain bread, brown rice, leafy green vegetables and nuts are naturally high in magnesium, but you could try a supplement, like Magasorb.

Bathing in Epsom Salts (magnesium sulfate) may help you lose weight

It's very circa 1955, but having a bath with Epsom Salts is a secret celebrity trick for looking great.

Magnesium sulfate can reduce water retention, banish toxins and tummy bloating because it's absorbed through the skin. It's also hailed as a miracle cure for greasy hair, dull skin, swollen ankles and jet lag.
