Vitamin D is a hot topic at the minute, with new research showing that it can increase the survival rates of cancer sufferers, especially those with breast, bowel cancer and Lymphoma.

And with Gwyneth Paltrow revealing a few years ago that she was deficient in the vitamin which can cause weak bones, peops have been all over the supplement ever since.

With this in mind, we thought we'd talk you through the basics on the sunshine vitamin.

What is Vitamin D?

The nutrient is made by your body under the skin in reaction to sunshine. This is why we need that vacay, stat.

Oily fish, such as salmon, sardines and mackerel are also rich in the vit, as well as eggs and fortified fat spreads, breakfast cereals and even powdered milk.

What does Vitamin D do for your health?

The nutrient can help to decrease inflammation, reducing the risk of allergies, decrease dental cavities, and even helps prevent and treat depression.

It can also be used in the regulation of cholesterol levels and improves your balance.

All in all, it seems pretty darn good.

Why would we get a Vitamin D deficiency?

There are quite a few reasons why people get a Vitamin D deficiency and it's a hard one to detect unless you go and get your levels checked at the docs.

Sometimes your body isn't absorbing enough, which can become worse with age. Boohoo.

So, what better excuse is there to start lazing in the sun a little more? (With your high factor sun cream on, of course.)
