Eight ways to keep fit and burn calories on holiday

Don't spend hours sweating in the gym before your holiday, just workout on the beach when you get there...

Most of us spend hours counting calories and hitting the gym before our summer holidays - only to let it all slip for a sun-soaked week of food, cocktails and poolside tanning.

While we whole-heartedly approve of ignoring calorie content on holiday, it's still possible to keep up a fitness routine without going to the gym.

The clever people at USA Pro have uncovered the best beach activities that you can do to burn calories and still have plenty of fun too.

We spoke to USA Pro personal trainer, Lucy Wyndham Read, to find more....

Pedalos


Pedaling away will not only help melt off those calories but this lower body exercise will also tone and sculpt through your bottom.

Calories Burned: 169 calories burnt per 20 minutes

Beach Volley Ball


This is a great all round body toner and the explosive jumps super charge your metabolism and will give you a super fat melting workout.

Calories Burned: 244 calories burnt per 30 minutes

Tennis


This game leaves no muscle untrained as you get to tone and sculpt your arms, chest, waist, back, legs, bottom. Not only is this toning but you also work aerobically which makes this a great holiday fitness activity.

Calories Burned: 256 calories burnt per 30 minutes

Surfing


This is a great way of improving your core stability and strengthen as you have to work out your abdominal hard here to help with balance and support, plus those leg muscles get a great workout also. 

Calories Burned: 95 calories burnt per 30 minutes

Beach Walking


Walking on dry sand gives you a great workout as you have to use your legs muscles harder to propel your forwards as the sand surface is not stable. Carrying small weights while you walk will also up the calorie burn.

Calories Burned: 159 calories burnt per 30 minutes

Swimming


A leisurely swim in the pool can be a great full body workout and aim to do breaststroke as this move is great for toning our bust, slimming our inner thighs and sculpting the bottom, make it fun by doing intervals of fast laps so two fast then one slower.

Calories Burned: 190 calories per 30 minutes

Dancing


Put the fun into fitness by dancing the night away, a great chance to flirt and lose weight.

Calories Burned: 143 calories burnt per 30 minutes

Snorkelling


This is a great lower body toning exercises and also helps increase your flexibility.

Calories Burned: 159 calories burnt per 30 minutes
