The Help's fashion

The Help

Last night, Handbag caught a preview of new film The Help, and it got us to thinking - is it just us, or do the baddies always get the best outfits? Bryce Dallas Howard’s turn as Hilly Holbrook in The Help is case in point, as her Southern belle uniform far surpasses anything that heroine Emma Stone's Skeeter wears. She may be a despicable character, but this villain knows how to dress.

From the moment she appears on screen, in her ‘50s-style prom dresses in oversized floral prints and layers of matching costume jewellery, you know this chick is a bitch. She’s the high school prom queen grown up to rule suburbia. Everything is so precise; the dresses are synched in at the waist to the extreme, her outfits are always the most colourful and her skirts the biggest – and can we talk about that hair for a minute? The ozone layer must have been damaged by the hair spray needed in order to create a bouffant that big.

The electric blue spandex trousers and tie-up crop top she wears in the scene in which she confronts Skeeter is possibly the best example of how this woman uses clothing – when she’s at her weakest, her style completely slides.

Bad gals aside, special mention also has to go to resident bimbo-with-a-heart-of-gold, Celia. Her Barbie doll pink wardrobe and cleavage-baring dresses manage to stay well clear of tacky. Bravo!

The Help is out at the cinema from Wednesday 26.
