John Galliano suspended from Dior after arrest
Christian Dior designer John Galliano has been suspended by the fashion house after being arrested amidst allegations that he assaulted a couple and made anti-semitic remarks in Paris on Thursday night.
Dior president and chief executive officer Sidney Toledano has issued a statement saying that the suspension will stay in place until the police investigation is complete. "The House of Dior declares with the greatest firmness its policy of zero tolerance with regard to any anti-Semitic or racist statement or attitude."
According to witnesses, flamboyant Galliano was drinking with friends in a cafe in Paris Marais district on Thursday night and approached a couple on the next table. An altercation broke out, about what we do not yet know, and the designer allegedly began making anti-semitic comments and attacked the couple.
The couple have filed a complaint with the police, who arrived and took Galliano to the station where he was tested for alcohol consumption and later taken to hospital to check his health, before being escorted to his home, according to police sources.
The couturier was in the middle of preparing Diors autumn/winter 2011 ready-to-wear collection for its show on 4 March. He is also on the schedule to present his own signature label on 6 March during Paris Fashion Week. Who knows what the fate of those will be!
