Eek for Giles!
Whatever Giles touches turns to gold. Let's think about it; he has his own label, he's the creative director for Emanuel Ungaro, he designs a massively successful collection for New Look (which is even named Gold!), and I could go on. Giles' jewellery line (yes you guest it, it is made from gold - both rose gold, yellow gold and there are also silver pieces) has been going for over a year now and is an obvious add on to his own line of clothing, bags and sunglasses, adopting the same unique sense of fun and humour that everyone associates with a Giles product.
The 90-piece jewellery collection for spring/summer 2011 features Eek mouse, one of Giles' famous motifs, along with dinosaurs, Bambi, Gizmo (from Gremlins) and Gonk - all now transformed into opulent icons, thanks to the Giles Midas touch.
We asked Giles about his jewellery line which was seen on the catwalk at his latest London Fashion Week show:
Where did the idea of Eek mouse come from?
Eek mouse is a playful character that popped up in the autumn/winter 2006 collection on the front of a shift dress. People took a real shine to him and he proved to be really popular. Since 2006, Eek has appeared on labels, as a key-ring, zip-pull and continues to make cameo appearances on various garments.
The whole range is so eclectic, featuring a variety of themes and signature shapes. Will these themes and shapes remain constant for further collections?
Yes, developing the jewellery collection Ive been able to explore and re-visit some of my favourite motifs and shapes but in a completely new medium. Im constantly being inspired for future jewellery collections. There are certain favourites that may well pop back again, - youve mentioned our little friend Eek, and my fascination for the Jurassic is still alive and well, so the little dinosaurs might not be extinct quite yet. The autumn/winter 2010 Gonks and the spring/summer 2008 Bambi may decide to be elusive and hard to get
but I never say never to anything!
Its actually just really exciting being able to see old and new ideas being put into action in different materials. We hope that the shared production values of the spring/summer 2011 jewellery collection continues to complement the clothing range. Im really pleased with the outcome so far - even the most unlikely shapes, like the monkey wrenches and wingnuts, have turned into beautiful surreal items of jewellery.
The collection will be available from 20 October at Selfridges, Harvey Nichols and Dover Street Market.
Prices start from £95 (earrings) - £880 (ornate necklaces).
