Prepping for LFW at Daniel Galvin

by Phoebe Frangoul

It’s the first day of London Fashion Week and for once instead of my usual windswept, scruffy self, I almost look like a proper Fashion Editor, thanks to my early morning session at the Daniel Galvin salon. This place is huge and beautiful – two floors, a wall of water and a bar, with over a hundred staff serving a glossy clientele. And me. First I sheepishly presented my bitten fingernails to manicurist Justine, who didn’t judge me, but simply got on with buffing and filing them back into a decent state. The highlight of this experience was the hand massage – if you spend all day bashing a keyboard, hands can very quickly turn into withered claws – so it was bliss to have the knots worked out. Then came the scary part – the paraffin wax bath. Aiieee, so hot! But strangely pleasurable, and my hands felt and look soft and smooth as a result. And finally, the polish – one of Essie’s new season shades, a dark grungy green-grey called ‘Power Clutch’ (Essie always give their polishes amazing names). Two coats plus a top coat and I was done and onto the blow dry with Josh.

After working through some Kevin Murphy mousse (less sticky than the old school products), he put my unruly mane into giant rollers, before carefully blow drying it into a sleek, shiny and bouncy ‘do which had a bit of a '60s, Valley of the Dolls feel. Meanwhile he told me about the shows he’s working on at London Fashion Week – Ann-Sofie Back, Temperley and lots more. After making my fringe shiny and straight (hallelujah) I was sent back into the world, feeling wonderfully groomed - maybe not quite enough to give La Wintour a run for her money, but enough for me.
