One of the fashion industry’s most glittering nights of the year, the Council Of Fashion Designers Of America (CFDA) Awards 2011 were held in New York last night, with Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCullough and Lazaro Hernandes scooping the top accolade Womenswear Designer Of The Year.
Hot favourite Alexander Wang won Accessories Designer Of The Year, with Michael Bastian collecting the Menswear Award. Speaking on the night, CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg said: “These Awards not only honour the best talents in fashion, the evening is also a testament to the influence of the CFDA and its efforts to help the industry.”
Celebrities and industry insiders rubbed shoulders at the oft-monikered ‘fashion Oscars’, from Lady Gaga, who wore Thierry Mugler to collect her Fashion Icon award, to Daily Telegraph’s indomitable outgoing fashion director Hilary Alexander, who was presented with the Eugenia Sheppard Media Award.
We were very excited to see Kanye West present influential Brit designer Phoebe Philo with International Designer Award - a well-deserved win - as well as Marc Jacobs taking home the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award, which he accepted from his friend and creative collaborator Sofia Coppola - not bad for a guy who’s not yet hit 50.
But the name to watch must be Singapore-born, Nepal-raised designer Prabal Gurung, who beat fierce competition from the Olsen twins and Joseph Altuzarra to win the Swarovski emerging talent award for womenswear. The modest designer launched his eponymous label in February 2009, and we expect great things from him in the seasons ahead.
