Burberrys winter wonderland show
Ever since British luxury brand Burberry said arrivederci to Milan and came home to show in London, the label has been successful in pushing the boundaries of fashion with innovative web-based initiatives, while staying true to its heritage. The latest, the unveiling of the autumn/winter 2011 collection, was no exception.
While we watched the show in a tent erected in Kensingston Gardens, fans around the world could also watch live thanks to video streaming in Burberry flagship stores, on the labels website and - in a world first through the iconic digital advertising screen in Londons Piccadilly Circus.
Designer Christopher Bailey cited 60s model and David Bailey muse Jean Shrimpton as the inspiration for the winter collection, with Swinging London shaping the whole show. Perhaps he had last winters sub-zero temperatures and freezing conditions still in mind, as the collection featured lots and lots of snug and chic coats: military styles, capes, glossy cropped puffa jackets, trenches and double breasted pieces in blanket checks. You name it, Burberry did it, in a palette of zesty orange, pillar box red, olive, turquoise, white and black.
Aside from the coats, the collection featured tulip-skirted dresses, flared trousers, cream cable knit jumpers and white cocktail dresses, with all the models sporting furry flat caps as they strutted down the catwalk, with Kate Bosworth, Rachel Bilson, Alexa Chung, Alison Mosshart, Ellie Goulding, Lily Donaldson and Anna Wintour watching from the starry front row.
In keeping with the wintry weather theme, the finale saw fake snow fall from the ceiling and on to the catwalk with the models wearing clear PVC capes over their clothes, as the voice of another English 60s icon, Dusty Springfield, bellowed out You Dont Have To Say You Love Me. Rule, Britannia!
